Mooney vs Schmidt

There is no way anything we’ve seen the past 2 years justifies an extension. PQ/Hardt may like Mooney and there were certainly a lot of reasons for them to like him, but even they have a limit. Especially now where there’s NIL money involved. I have no idea what will happen the rest of this season or when it’s done, but I don’t see how anyone who objectively looks at all aspects of this program right now can honestly say it’s trending in the right direction.
Well, I was being a bit sarcastic when thinking extension more likely than getting rid of him, but Moon didn’t deserve an extension last time. At least I think not. But he surely got an extension. So, history seems to be on his side more than true performance. How many extensions has he gotten? I can’t remember or keep track. So in the meantime, here we are in year 21 which is a good many years longer than most would expect. But maybe this time is different. I’ll believe when I see it. Until then I’d have to place bets on extension.

8 straight years with 10 plus more wins in a10 conference compared to Mooney's 7 in 21 years . Not too mention Schmidt came into Bonaventure right after a scandal. Mooney was gifted a program that saw recent tournament success before getting there and hasn't developed it in anyway meanwhile Schmidt took the Bonnies from nothing, to a hard out in conference each year (minus this one)
I’m no Mooney apologist but you’re having some selective memory on him being “gifted” a winning program. When Ole Jer left, UR bball was pretty much a disaster. Lost all our guards and didn’t have a ton to work with, all pre-portal.

I’d peel that one out of your argument.

I think an extension is unlikely barring some kind of miracle run to the tournament. The argument that you need four years on contract to secure talent has gone the way of the dodo bird between NIL and the portal.

But we’re even less likely to buy out a contract, there’s literally zero history there. We’d let the contract die a slow painful death which is brutal a coach who is just good enough to surprise you in the final year of contract.

Richmond's 4 years before Mooney got hired: 71-56 with a tournament appearance.
St Bonaventure's 4 years before Schimdt: 24-88

Night and day who came into a better situation

I do think it is harder to recruit at a place like St. Bonnie which is in the middle of nowhere in upstate New York and you spend most of your time there dealing with freezing temperatures and deep snow, than it is a growing metropolis like UR with a much better climate. We have better facilities, more money, an all around better University. UR is a better job and that is where we get the mantra of Schmidt had done more with less thinking.

With all that said, though Schmidt like Mooney has proven to be nothing more than an average coach. If I'm a St. Bonnie fan, I've seen enough of the Schmidt experience and want off that ride as well. For the good of each program and the conference in general, both of these long tenured coaches need to move on.

I wonder what the dynamic is between schmidt and Woj. Are they PQ/Moon type buddies? Woj spent a lot of time hyping his Joe Grahovac finding. He has looked really good at times, but now Woj played him 2 minutes and even had to make a statement, basically saying due to his lack of organized ball does not understand how to play yet. I'm guessing they will get a couple years to make it work, but have to wonder if this type of scenario will strain the relationship.
