Mooney--an under appreciated coach.

also, staying on Bona for a moment, after seeing how a high profile GM came in and cleared out a longtime coach after only 1 season, probably no way Moon goes for any GM who is not under the triumverate thumb.
I still find it funny that a journalist who never coached and likely never even played the game is somehow a "high profile GM" who may have a say in basketball decisions at an A10 level basketball program.

Was the Woj Effect on the old board? Too many message boards for my brain :).

Have to potentially give sman his flowers here. If all these twitter reporters are to be believed seems like a big disconnect between Woj and Schmidt. The caveat is maybe they hire a better coach and Woj brings in better players. But for now, the Woj Effect and experiment has seemingly failed. Fascinating stuff on this thread:

Woj is a fan ... with great NBA contacts.
he's at best as qualified as any fan on this board to evaluate coaches or recruits.

where he's likely valuable is in raising NIL funds and promoting SBU. but if he had anything to do with Schmidt retiring, then he's actually a net negative to the program.

He had everything to do with Schmidt retiring. Also, how is he going to help raise NIL funds? Is he going to convince his other NBA contacts to donate money to a university they have no affiliation with? I don’t see how he would be more helpful in that regard than anyone else who has a fundraising position.

Thanks for the link. I looked on the ESPN Richmond website earlier and didn’t see anything under the podcast links for Jack’s show.

Listened to the segment. Jack says “if you’re a Richmond fan, I don’t know how you can go to next season with any hope”. It’s refreshing to hear people who don’t have an affiliation to the university in anyway give their unbiased analysis. We’ve all been saying that on this forum, but it’s being noticed outside of our sphere too. They also talked about the Duquesne loss being inexcusable and expressed the embarrassment it brought to our program. Agree with them again. They then talk about how the rest of the A10 is putting themselves in position to win and Richmond needs to take a hard look on how we are evaluating players and doing this as a program. Right again. Excellent analysis from those two. Was a great listen.

Bottom line, I’m glad to hear other people speak about this program that aren’t Bob black or JOC. A sign of high level programs are that people on sports talk/radio shows will talk about you. We are a high level program. Unfortunately, we have leadership that doesn’t take that seriously.

I encourage everyone to listen to them. Lots of great discussion and analysis. Start at the 24 min mark.

do we know that or are we assuming?

I think a call from Woj would carry more weight with boosters than a call from a typical no-name GM, but who knows?

my understanding of the reports of what people seemingly in the know with Bonnie’s athletics have reported. I never know anyone’s intention but it seems that Woj played a heavy role in Schmidt’s retirement.

If I was a booster for the Bonnie’s I wouldn’t be more inclined to donate more just because Woj asked me to. I’d want to see initiates and efforts taking place to become an A10 contender. No different than us here at UR. We don’t have a Woj equivalent but if I was a big donor, I would not open my checkbook just because Queally asked me to or Hardt says please with sprinkles on top. I’d want to see objective and measurable ways this program is taking to be an A10 contender.

It was worse than that. The GM model in college basketball does not work. Woj thought he was a better coach. The Coach and his assistants should be in control of recruitment, not a commentator.

Sounds like Woj is the Bonnie’s version of Queally. Except he doesn’t want to be best buds with the coach and give him coaching immunity for life.

Schmidt is the upstate NY version of our own Milkman. He deserved to go - they were awful this year and he seems ill suited to the new environment too.

Put it this way: Schmidt lost twice to UR this year. Fireable offense.

Only UR does not have fireable offenses for its coach.

man, perception changed quickly. Schmidt was boy-wonder not long ago.
I still like him. don't know how much NIL the amazing Woj raised, but imo Schmidt has done well considering what he was selling.

I think the way we looked at Schmidt is the way the outside world looks at Moon. They think he's doing a good job.

The numbers say he was as mediocre as Moon, it was just perception was off. Homers like Dr. G, who was again slurping the two coaches in the pillow fight game and basically saying that he wouldn't be surprised if UR and LUC were top 3 in A10 next year - they're spreading misinformation because of the coaching fraternity code.

Moon probably had 150% the bball budget of SBU every year until this year being the main difference in why I think Moon was doing a worse job overall.

Unlike UR, the Bonnies brought in someone who demanded better results. They're not shooting for mediocre and pushing goalposts further out the more the results get worse.

Didn’t know where to put this. So placing here. Bobby Hurley out at Ariz St after 11 up and down seasons. Sound familiar in 21 seasons. Hurley 3 NCAA appearances in 11 years vs Mooney 3 in 21 years and counting.
