Game thread - @URI 2PM SAT Feb. 7th. ESPN+

No, we are not sure. I pointed to that game in a thread last week as the biggest game of the year remaining (bc we likely lose most of the rest we expect to, so if we lose that one, given LUC's season, it's basically the nail in the coffin on Dean 55.)

btw today's loss drop's Moon to .554 overall and .552 at UR. He was an OCD-pleasing .555 overall coming into today's game.

Went back to man to man, Cochran drive to the basket for 3 point play.
No we went back to the fucking matchup zone and we don’t hedge any screen thus leaving Tyne stuck on Cochran.
I would have put AP on him just to create more height he had to shoot over. Rams were 34 - 42 from FT and shot 10 less shots then us from the field. This may be one of the worse Spider teams I have seen on defense.

we switched on the most basic ball screen and Johnston got on Cochran who ate his lunch for that 3 point play late.

going to zone got us carved up by the flash to the high post, baseline cut for an easy dunk (note: maybe moon can study this play for how to attack a zone, it's zone offense 101.)

there's no hope on that side of the ball this season.

Speaking of AP. I don't think he played today???? Last game vs Davidson 12 mins. Seems his time has been reduced. Is he in Mooney's doghouse, Mooney shortening the lineup, or has Mooney moved on from him?

Johnston is a poor ball handler and today had some poor lazy passes and only 3 points.
I really can’t stand watching him get so many minutes every game. I supposed with AA out we don’t have many other options. But this season he has had 4 or 5 great games, and 20ish really poor performances. I’d honestly rather see Tyne out there, at least he has another year of eligibility

To end 5-13 is a pretty low bar. That means we only win 2 more games going 2-6. We still have St Bon & Loy Chi on the schedule - both below us in standings which should be givens. I'd hope the coach who is the all time leader in wins for UR basketball history can deliver more than 2 wins to close the season. As it stands, it looks like our OOC soft schedule did 0 to prepare us for conference play. What baffles me is that it seems like the talent level is much better for us this year than last.
We have far better talent than last year but run a terrible defensive system. It’s hard to win when you can’t stop whoever you’re playing against and you’re pretty much relying on them beating themselves.

I feel like the way Mooney coaches takes all the aggression out of players that have talent…especially at the end of games. Coach’s “beautiful” system (which gets praised by every tv announcer) doesn’t work against opponents who are more aggressive and athletic (which is basically every opponent outside of Southern Virginia). It’s not that the players aren’t trying but the system effectively softens the team (lack of rebounding, not drawing fouls, not playing strong defense). Occasionally we will have a player like Kevin Anderson who can overcome this with his sheer will and skill but usually not.

I think we take basketball players and turn them into robots.

AI isn’t great at improvisation.
