Game thread - @URI 2PM SAT Feb. 7th. ESPN+

As long as we shoot 80% from 3 Mooney’s system works great. Unfortunately rebounding, aggressiveness, toughness, strength, and athleticism almost always win out.
Correct.

Thought our guys played much harder than in recent games, but too many fundamentals lacking. And that’s on the coach. Next week with GM and VCU is gonna be tough. Would be nice to steal one of those games.

Too bad Johnston fouled out. At least he scored a lot. Oh, wait. At least he was efficient. Oh, wait. At least he passed well. Oh, wait. At least he rebounded well. Oh, wait. At least he defended well. Oh, wait.

They took 42 FTs to our 15. They went 34-42 and we went 13-15 from the line. We also had no answer for Cochrane.
You would think one of the highest paid coaches in the conference would’ve game planned to potentially try to neutralize the player who scored the most in our first matchup, but not Mooney

Our system often gives opponents an advantage - while we weave on offense and take time off the clock avoiding pressure and not physically challenging the opponents defense, our finesse players on defense can’t handle physical opponents and have to foul. Rhody was allowed to shoot 42 shots with click stopped and no one guarding them. Looks like we tried to go zone a little bit but too late.

The refs were whistle happy. But as noted only one team took advantage. I saw AJ run into a guy and throw it up twice and got the foul twice. We ran beside the driver. Only AA knows how to play position defense bc apparently he learned it in HS and AAU. Overall thought both teams looked poorly coached. But Archie improved on his terrible A10 win percentage.

It's like negative 20 wind chill up here. Hope the team has safe travels and no mechanical issues today.

Endgame.

Bad looks or no shots. UR had to huck more than one.

Down 5 with under 20s left they dribbled a bit, made 2 passes before attempting a 2 point shot with 5s remaining. Genius. Saw this a few weeks ago too. Didn't work then, so by all means try it again.

Defense - foul, then foul some more. Then don't get the key rebound of the game, which effectively puts the game out of reach.

These are hallmarks of UR basketball for 21 years.

Team played okay on offense except when things tightened up last possessions of each half, bc we have long been horrible at that unless Kevin Anderson was on the team.

Still lost.

Second to last place.

Missed this game. I was watching our flagship sport (men’s lacrosse) take care of business against Robert Morris instead. Will also plan to watch our other flagship sport (women’s basketball) in about an hour. Anyone want to summarize this game?

The positives:

Tanner looked playable today.
Walz played like we thought he would back in November.
Lopez scored some points efficiently (19 points on 8 FGA)
Thomas played a solid game off the bench.
46/41/87 shooting splits.

These are all consolation prizes, of course.
