Game Thread - St. Joes @RC - Sunday 1/11 noon - USA network

It was a tough day in the RC today. It is surprising the Men had such a slow start at home after 2 conference road wins. On my drive home I listened to the post game show where Bob Black mentioned the Spider’s have Lost 6 of the last 7 against St. Joe’s.

I have to think its either illness or lack of confidence/effectiveness. That's two games against big A10 teams that he has played diminished minutes.
If heart issue was in play have to thin Mooney and medical staff would not take that risk. If so - as you are alluding - that would be crazy that they would make some arbitrary judgement that it is safe for him to play 12 but not 20 minutes.
 
Just looked to be bothered by their size, refs not calling much and st Joes packing it in today. Had a few bad turnovers and was hanging his head in the huddle - could see Walz trying to pick him up in the huddle.

He’s a bit too lax with the live ball turnovers which is the easiest way historically to wind up in the Mooney doghouse
 
All those coaches on the bench, did none of them happen to notice the we only had 2 team fouls with less than a minute to go in a game we were behind 2 or 3 points???
This coaching is just criminally bad, stupid grade school mistakes.

After the Bonny game, I finally decided to go to a game and picked this one. I should have known...actually I did know because this feces is all too common under Mooney.
 
Daughtry was really bad today. Matador defense on first 2 possessions and at least a couple of awful, really awful turnovers in the first half. He looks to score with blinders on when he gets the ball, but has lately been getting himself down low in bad spots and just coughing up the ball or trying a wild shot. He threw a lazy pass from wing toward the top of key which got picked off and I don't blame them for sitting him after that.

FWIW everyone was really bad in the first half, so can pin this L on the players as much as the staff. But clearly SJU watched the Bona highlights bc Bona got tons of baseline cuts for easy hoops and so did SJU in the first half. Between those and just wide open 3s, was not a stellar effort on defense that half. You could even say we didn't compete on defense the whole half.

So many mid-range shots today. I think the first 4 shots of 2nd half were 2 by Lopez, a FT line jumper by Walz and one other mid range. Announcers even specifically mentioned at one point how UR was getting nothing at the rim.

AP should never be in the game when you need a 3, much less actually taking a 3 in a big spot. 100% red light from 3 for him, it's a losing shot. 23% from 3 coming in this season (after 25% from 3 last year) and 0-2 today. I'd never guard him out there, why would you?

Walz was wide open but he's not a catch and shoot guy unless he can walk into it with his slow release, so the defender had time to recover. But he still needed to take it and not pass bc of the clock - Tyne on the wing with a defender running at him was never going to get a better look than what Walz had from dead on. Honestly, it looked like UR had only game planned for a FT make and ran same thing as if it was a 3 point game. Down 2, give it to AA and let him zoom to the hoop or get fouled and try to win in OT.
 
Another joke from Clownshow Mooney. Would love to see a stat on what we shoot from fadeaways and one handed floaters. It felt like we were about 3 for 20 on those.

A Roumoglou shot from 3 is as good as a turnover. We cannot be having that down the stretch. Adjustments were lacking all game and Mike Walz and Beagle are both terrified of doing anything outside the crappy system that they end up doing nothing.

Might be the worst coached team in the country
 
At the risk of being accused of being a family member of Chris Mooney or having intimate sexual relations with the coaching staff, this one is mostly on the players. They didn't play well at all in the first half, didn't shoot well the whole game, and generally couldn't make the big play on offense when presented.

Mike Walz: terrific kid, incredibly smart, I'm proud of him as a Spider, physically built like a brick shithouse, mentally fragile. There's no scenario in the entire history of the world where you make 2 three pointers from the top of the key in the final minute to get your team into position to win, then get the ball at the top of the key and an open shot with less than 2 seconds left, and you pass it. To anyone, open or covered.

I think this is a valid take. But would also add when its a consistent theme with the players (let downs after a good game or couple good games) it is on the coach to know the temperature in the room and address it.
I remember in HS when we were playing a bad team next, coach would be all over us with threats of running before we played the game.

But yes, to Natives point too, helps to have an alpha or two or three. A Gonzo, Kevin Smith, Gilly, Geriot type that sets the tone.

Waltz instinct 90 pct of time is make an extra pass. Even with 2 seconds left he can’t deviate. It’s a rigid mindset.
