Game Thread - St. Joes @RC - Sunday 1/11 noon - USA network

17, biggest issue is sustaining energy and motivation. Yes part is on the players but happens year after year with Mooney. As Native pointed out, always have a disaster in or out of Christmas break. Just when we feel good this year the team just plays flat, like today. Just keeps happening. So to your point , no consistency. The coach needs to be the leader and at least enforce defensive effort.

AA was the postgame interview and he said that his sense was that the team thought this would be an easy win at him after the good play on the road. Always a recipe for disaster.

My one positive comment for the game is Will Johnson. He definitely played hard and finished with 7 rebounds which is proof in the stat sheet. Otherwise, it was easily the worst game I have watched this season.

Not good enough to think about easy wins.

That is on coach

Looks like spiders comeback came just short. This team could get hot and win 4 games in A10 tournament or lose to Fordham in round one. This season has been a microcosm of the past several years — wild variability. Are we going to finish 15-3 in A10 play? Are we going to have 8 D1 wins? Even within the same game: are we going to allow 45 points in one half or 22 points? I have no idea what to expect from us each game. This is not how a program is built and sustained properly.
No doubt we are a Jekyll and Hyde team. Play a tremendous game on both ends vs St Bon and several days later look like $hit against St. Joes.

Looked today like the team that lost to CS. Got beat on the boards and AGAIN Moon’s coverage of 3 point shooters left to us in the stands. Under minute Tyne covering St Joe big man under the basket - nothing new there for CM choices. Playing from behind the entire game not a formula for success.

Can someone post me that last play?

If you think Mooney is a good coach for Richmond after 20 years when we had really really good coaches like Tarrant and Beilein, yes you are a VCU troll. U go to VCU games when Richmond is playing, so obviously u understand the poor product under Moon or just trolling.
I'm trying to find it, i have ESPN + subscription but obviously this was on USA-if i can get a download of game I'll try.

Yeah i went to a VCU game with a friend while visiting Richmond for the holidays. Guess that means I can't be a Spiders fan either. I cared enough to watch the whole game over NFL football.

Tough loss. Mooney made several decisions down the stretch that really cost us.

56 seconds left, down by 2, he chose to put in a lineup with 4 of our smaller guards (AA, MT, WJ, DT). I assumed we were going for a steal, would foul if we didn’t get it and sub in to defend/rebound. No steal, no foul, and that possession ended with an offensive rebound put back by Joes to put us down 4. Did not like that lineup decision at all. Did not give us a chance for a stop/rebound.

Then after Joes made front end of 1 and 1 with seven seconds left, he uses his last timeout. Would have much preferred we save it to use at half court and draw up a play with 3-4 seconds left. Ended up with Tyne throwing up a last second prayer instead.

Two crucial moments where I feel Mooney made bad decisions.

The one critique I'll give of Mooney is the offense over relies on passing. That is probably while Walz (in addition to there being someone in his face) passed. My cousin went one year to the Mooney basketball camp and he said there were passing drills before you could shoot.

Loss was made worse by the fact that the university invited a Boy Scout troop to the game and one of the troop leaders decided to wear a VCU shirt in his free seats for the entire game. Unacceptable.

Even that is variable. We should never come out with low energy and lack of motivation against anyone. That is 100% a mindset, effort, and desire.

What happened to the aggression with driving to the paint and rebounds? Some times we do that and sometimes we don’t. One day we will shoot the 3 great and the next day shoot poorly. We can win at Belmont one day and then lose to Charleston Southern at home the next day. We play La Salle at home next. Are we going to win by 15 or lose by 5? I don’t think any of us can say with certainty what will happen. Predicting this team is like trying to predict the stock market.
