Assistant coach
I’m with you. To me, there’s no way any of them can be blind to these results and actually believe this is the best we can do. Just look at SLU going from had to amazing in 2 years with a new coach. Look at UR with what Roussell and Chemotti have built. It’s painfully obvious that it’s because of excellent coaching. All valid points. You have to wonder if within our inner circle (Hallock, Hardt, PQ) if they are looking at Women's Hoops and Lax as the 2 sports where they want to focus their energy and investment right now. They have to know the state of the basketball program, its roster, our staff, and our investment relative to other programs when you add all of that up, they have to acknowledge, it isn't going anywhere great in the next couple of years. Perhaps this is part of the radio silence, they literally know if they talk, they would just be blowing smoke up everyone's rear, so best to remain silent and let Mooney float around with his non-answers and pontifications.
It still is befuddling how we cling to Mooney when we see what other coaches like Schertz can do to turn around a peer program like SLU so quickly, while we stay stuck in the same cycle.
Only thing I can think of is that UR recognizes these results are bad but are in a bind. They probably want to also fund women’s basketball (as we should) sufficiently which is why Roussell is staying. We should also capitalize on the momentum with our men’s lacrosse and fund them sufficiently as well. This all takes money. So money to fund those programs at a higher level and then funding our Men’s bball team to have around a $4-5 million payroll likely means we choose not to also pay Mooney’s buyout. They also probably give Mooney as much benefit of the doubt as anyone can possibly have because he’s been here so long and has had some good success scattered throughout the years. Also, the admin may think it’ll be a bad look that all the “fire Mooney” people were right and are going to stick it out as long as possible out of hubris. Perhaps giving him more payroll is still probably cheaper than his buyout.
I honestly don’t know and there are so many reasons they can come up with to justify these awful results. All I feel confident in saying is that I don’t think if you put PQ or Hardt on a lie detector test and asked them if they truly believe that Mooney and the result we’ve had under him is the best this program could do, that they would answer yes. Why we still choose to drag this out another year anyway, is beyond me.
