Daughtry into the portal

I wonder when we will know all the departures? Are there some transfer deadlines that sort of tell us when we should know about all the departures?

The portal is open for 2 weeks so that would be the longest period of time. Just have to put your name in. Signing somewhere has no end date as long as your name was submitted by the deadline.

Not surprised that Daughtry is in the portal. Seems like the rest we have at least received some sort of informal report that they would return.

I don't think he had his best year at UR

Well, Daughtry was the one player (outside of AA), I had any desire to bring back. But even that desire was middling, because of his defensive liabilities and inconsistent play. I do find it odd that he made such a big deal out of coming home in playing in front of his friends when he signed here and clearly was in line for major minutes next year, so I just have to wonder what the full story is here.

yeah - I like most of us were really high on him during our crazy tough non-conference schedule where he looked like a man among boys .. but he struggled most of the conference season and felt like his attitude especially on defense wasn't great a fair amount

I’m with you. He’s the only other guy outside of AA I would’ve wanted back. He never took off at UR like many hoped but what I liked was that he brought a different dimension to our offense. Big body, not afraid of getting contact down low and knew how to get to the rim. Defense was a liability, but maybe that was also a Mooney scheme since defense was not good across the board.

He was benched the entire game at Loyola for missing a walk-through practice. Looking back, that seems like a pretty harsh punishment for player and the team off of one missed practice. Sure maybe you don't start him, but to bench him the entire game, particularly in one of the few games where we were favored. Perhaps, that was because it wasn't his first time.

I can't come up with a good excuse for missing a walk through. Especially a road game when you probably have a roommate.
I'm 100% fine with the punishment. these are grown men and getting paid. show some responsibility.

On one hand, Moon never seemed to use him properly - had him stand in the corner, where he shot very well from 3, and only occasionally posted him up, where he was a bucket on offense (Cayo low post game, plus shooting ability were his strengths on offense.) Rarely was he allowed extended time to play through mistakes. 52/43/59 (shockingly low FT %) shooting splits.

On the other hand, he turned the ball over a ton, his defense was poor and he could be a no-passing-zone all by himself when he got the ball. Usage was close to 30% (AA was 20%, Walz similar.) Turnover % above 15%.

I don't think we would have seen much different next year honestly. The plan seemed to be play him until he started with turnovers, then yank him. Unless he suddenly became a much more careful ballhandler - note, was not gonna happen - I don't think he was getting big minutes.

The Mooney coaching magic.

Looked like he had some skills and potential. Not sure lived up to expectations. A few nice games but not enough. Probably not a Mooney System guy. We seem to get those types. Hard to get prototype Moon guys regularly, and coach won’t adapt. Wish him well. The cupboard is looking pretty thin from a 5-14 team 2 years running.
