Agreed and he just isn't a fit for us (a Mooney led us). He is someone I'd sight as emblematic of the Mooney era - - - a player who appears to be good enough to be a top 5 player for us (both eye test and past accomplishments) and he can't get on the floor because Moon will never adjust the system to get best players out there and will play guys who fit and run the offense the way he wants (e.g Tanner/Tyne) instead of the better player all the time. Yes Daughtry was a turnover machine (and not great on D) in what time he got, but was it really our best approach to keep feeding us Tanner every night while Daughtry did the slow burn on the bench and got the quick hook when he made mistakes? Or was in worth a shot to say - - maybe we have more potential as a team if we adjust the system to capitalize on what the players we do have can actually do well? Why wouldn't he leave? He played 16 minutes a game on a 5-14 A10 team that started 4 guards and desperately needed size on the floor. If he couldn't get more than 16 minutes this year, how would he even get that next year, when we hopefully add some needed size.
Same with Thomas IMO. We started 4 guards and he wasn't one of them, and only averaged 14 mpg. I don't expect more minutes for either player next year if they stayed, and they had to be pretty frustrated overall this year.
I have said this for a long time - - the thing that bothers me the most about Moon is that he puts such high value on "doing things right" and such low value on actually making plays. So a guy making 5 plays and two mistakes is slotted well behind a guy making no plays but no mistakes. This runs through the whole culture of the program. Example: We are always good at no turnovers (no mistakes) and bad at offensive rebounds (that's a guy making a play. And many offensive rebounds don't make up for us giving up a fast break bucket or two because those would be mistakes. He coaches just like he sounds - - never are we "going for it" we are just looking respectable (we competed) and hoping nobody recognizes that we can run the weave great but we can't really play!
You know that pesky wins and losses thing is annoying. If we just didn't have that we wouldn't need to keep score and he could declare this year a huge success because of how great we looked running the offense. Having to get scores just messes us up and rushes us at times and hides how good we really are on offense!
