Chris Mooney - Head Coach

The board old heads we are missing, among others, seem to be 4700, Gkiller, and Trap. Unless they are lying in wait under new board names :).

Will say that after 4700's return, much to G's chagrin I imagine, he seemed to sour big time on moon. I think a litmus test with 4700 this season will be the usage of Tyne. Again, I am pulling for, and hoping that Tyne took a big jump this offseason. But if we get the same kind of production, or lack thereof, as last season - not sure moon will make the switch. And as I stated in another thread, this poor OOC will unfortunately mask issues, and not expedite the need to have best players play. In addition to all the other reasons to dislike this OOC, I think that is number one - it will mask issues until we get to A10 play.
Yes, UR took the script from Rhode Island (11-2 OOC last year). Looking for a ride on the early A10 hype train.

I wonder what the winning percentages look like?
And maybe the average NET since it has been out?
Here's the winning records of the coaches at their respective schools from highest to lowest:

Mark Few - 83.0%
Bill Self - 80.4%
Randy Bennett - 71.7%
Tom Izzo - 70.9%
Matt Painter - 68.7%
Scott Drew - 64.3%
Jon Judkins - 62.7% (Utah Tech previously was Dixie State. Became D1 2020-2021 season. D1 win % is 35.6%)
Gary Manchel - 62.3% (Mercyhurst was D2 up until last year. D1 win % is 48.4%)
James Jones - 56.7%
Greg Kamp - 56.3%
Chris Mooney - 55.2%

So is this accurate?

There are 9 programs that have had the same coach (in D1) for over 20 years.

The expected:
Michigan ST 31 years
Gonzaga 27
ST Mary’s 25
Baylor 23
Kansas 23
Purdue 21

The others:
Oakland 42 (27 as D1)
Yale 27
And…
Mooney 21…

Yes. Of all the coaches who have been in the same D1 program for 20+ years, Mooney has the lowest winning percentage.

Nice to see passion out of Mooney, especially towards the end of the video. Our practices need to be intense. That’s the only way we can replicate it in the games. A long standing criticism of our teams throughout the years is that we play soft. We got to start playing with a chip on our shoulder.

I will continue to be frustrated with Mooney for being okay with this schedule. If he wanted a tougher schedule, we would have a tougher schedule. And, my frustration became worse and worse after hearing his BS excuses for the schedule. Our schedule looks like we are a 300+ team. It just sucks. And for the 1st time since the early 80s, I don't care about how we do OOC.

I enjoy watching these videos. That said, not much at all to take away. 17, if you want to see intense I wish I had some mic'd up video from a couple of my kids AAU coaches. Not that they ever show defense much in videos in general, but I have a bad feeling again this season that it will be underemphasized. Hoping to be wrong, and in fairness we had really good defense a few seasons back. But between the returners and the scouting report on the transfers, not overly optimistic.

It's a good video and always nice to get some insight into the day to day. I would hardly call that an intense practice, however. I think Mooney is showing some good energy in that video so I will give him Kudos for that, but I don't think this is anywhere close to being intense.

I don't think practices need to be Bobby Knight style. I watched some Roy Wiliams practices, and he wasn't screaming at players the whole time or anything. More so took an instructional approach and slowed things down for the players. Lots of ways to get it done.

In fairness, you can put out coach using colorful language or him yelling at players on social media. That would not go over well.

Yes, that would definitely be a bad look. And too Sensible's point - I don't think the Bob Knight / Mike Rice type of coaching tactics are still viable any longer, nor maybe the most effective. Though I would guess Hurley at Uconn's practices have a bit of that element, but guessing not over the top. I just don't think you can glean anything one way or another - with the slight nod to the fact that I have never seen defense being taught in these videos - and I do see that with other unnamed schools. We do have first hand accounts that Villanova practices harder. On the flip side we are according to Tanner taking it more serious from day 1. Hoping the JMU exhibition is streamed. Will be very interesting to see. That is when the rubber starts hitting the road.

Interview with Mooney. Interesting parts for me.

3:20 min - Mooney was asked about thoughts of our schedule. Highlighted Dayton as having a good schedule and similar to ones we’ve had in past. Then says rest of league is really challenging. As we know plenty other A10 members have put together a challenging schedule, not just Dayton. Wishes we had high major but didn’t work out. He mentioned working on it for the future.

10:40 min - Mooney was asked about confidence level AND expectations going into this season. Only answered confidence part and mentioned nothing of expectations

Thanks for the link @Spider17.

Second interview by Adam on The Fan here in Richmond. Happy to see UR getting a little more coverage from someone other than Bob Black.

Sounds like the JMU exhibition is going to be treated like an actual game versus a practice, so will be interesting to see what the rotations are and how the chemistry looks after all the “focused work”.
