A clueless input

A comment was made after today’s game against Davidson. That Chris Mooney won the A-10 title two years ago. And how he is going to turn this ship around. It truly is amazing after 20 plus years of coaching. They really think that Mooney is going to save the day. He has lost this team completely.

His gyroscope must be defective and the UR Mediocrity is taking on water.

I wonder if there’s any change in plan forthcoming. Under the presumption that CM feels no heat, then he really ought to move aggressively to work towards the future and start figuring out what he has for next season, even if that means a potentially worse lineup in the near term.

Not sure I’d go as far as burning Homenicks redshirt although I could make a case, but I’d absolutely give McGlothin some run. Harper is there as long as he’s fit. We know AA is a baller.

I’d rather see JRob at the 4 than the 5 but no real options behind Walz.

It’s truly terrible. It’s been 6 years since February games mattered to our ncaa hopes. Sucks almost all meaning from the games for me.
Yep. This makes it so frustrating. In 2014, we were in some bubble talk before Ced got hurt. Then, 2015, we were in the 1st four out. 2017, we finished 13-5 A-10 and maybe get in at 14-4 or 15-3, or if we just beat VCU in that OT A-10 tourney semi final game. This is one of the reasons I was more pro Mooney than many of you back then. I felt we were still relevant and had enough seasons where we did have chances to make the tourney.

2020 was fantastic and 2022 was a great A-10 tourney and NCAA tourney win, although I can agree the regular season was a let down because we were never in the at large mix. I enjoyed 2024, and who knows what the committee might have done with us had we gone 16-2 and then lost in the A-10 finals to finish 26-8, so I will say the games mattered to me that year.

But, now? The past 2 seasons have been so bad. Like you said, these games don't even matter and that frustrates me tremendously. Not only that, but in the past when we were out of the at large mix, I always had hope we could get hot in March and win the A-10 tourney, so my interest stayed high. The past 2 seasons are the only times I haven't had hopes of a run in March. And add in that, unlike 2019, when I had big hopes for a good season in 2020, I have no hope at all for a good season next year.

Yes, I mostly agree VT.

The issue I have with the caveats, as I posted to Spider17, is not that those seasons were not fun to watch or in some measure good seasons, worthy of interest, it's that in the big games that mattered most, the Spiders always lost and thus were never a part of the final at large discussions. So yes, fun seasons, but I have to discount them because we walked such a tightrope and then didn't rise to the occasion when it mattered most (VCU OT loss in Pittsburgh, VCU quarters loss after a bye in Brooklyn when Kendall slipped and ANO didn't get a key board...) In 2022 we underachieved making the season less fun bc we knew the potential was there, but luckily Gilyard started firing in the A10, the UD point guard went down at halftime and Matt Grace stepped up with big shots in crunchtime. The A10 tournament outside that season has been a mess under Moon the last 15 years.

In some instances like 2 years ago, it was the OOC that blew up any at large potential - even worse. So while 15-3 was great, the 1 seed was nice, it was really all about the A10 tournament and peaking at the right time and putting it all together in Brooklyn. Instead, out by 2 p.m. first day.

There is really no difference between going 0-13 any year in the OOC and this season's OOC if you are talking about being in the at large discussions. It's all about the A10 tourney in either situation.

Especially if you can only go 10-3 against the 350th ranked OOC schedule (12-1 is my minimum expectation for that schedule and 13-0 should be realistic for a team with UR's resources.)

I say this not in kidding mode, but we all know CM is inflexible as inflexible can be. His changes come at a snail’s pace. He is wedded to his philosophy, game theory / management, and just about everything he does. A few changes to starting lineup are easy. Realizing and admitting failures in offensive and defensive strategies are a bit much for CM to move away from stagnation.

I’ve been watching Spider ball for over 40 plus years and remember what it was watching the best of the best (Tarrant and Beilein). We are light years away from what those coaches brought to our program. We have no chance of finding another coach like those 2 for the next xx years (fill in the blank).

The OOC schedules have made all the OOC games meaningless the last 2 years. Yes, we played Auburn last season, but we had already lost 4 games to non power teams by then. I barely even watched this year. 26 OOC games the past 2 years and we played 3 times the non D1 (3) teams as we did power teams (1). What a joke. What an embarrassment. And then we get to hear our coach whine about it as if it were impossible to do better than the 350th OOC SOS this year and about the 270th one last year.

And, we only went 15-11 OOC the past 2 years against these garbage schedules. So, take out the 3 non D1s and Auburn, and we went 12-10 in 22 games against D1 non majors that we should go no worse than 20-2 against. 8 of our 11 OOC losses were to teams that are or finished 180 or worse. WTF!!!
