2025–26 Spider men's basketball schedule

Mooney and Hardt just prove over and over and over that they are fine to slide into oblivion. If we had a program at the level of relevance it should be - minimal standards - no way a Cutter Sisk even has a debate in his mind between effing Wofford and Richmond. But because we are just totally hiding from the smoke and not COMPETING, we are on par with Wofford and have 1/2 the NCAA appearances in the last 15 years. He is LYING about the schedule - JMU coaches outed him big time. But because he is such a NICE guy, no one will call him out.
Remember, our AD and coach have normalized mediocrity.

The more scheduling stories and matchups achieved by other schools should show our fan base how far we’ve fallen. And no, on scheduling we’re really not “competing”. We traded in “competing” for “non acceptable and soft.”

So based on last year's NETs, here is the quad breakdown:

Q2
128. at Belmont

Q3
114. vs Illinois State (depending on MTE results)
124. vs Furman
191. at Elon

Q4
176. ECU
190. Southern Illinois
218. W&M
269. Gardner–Webb
270. vs Charlotte (depending on MTE results)
293. ODU
294. VMI
296. Charleston Southern
361. The Citadel

Non-DI
Southern Virginia

Oh my God....

Yep. Just like last year. We thought the team was good, the staff knew better and scheduled accordingly.
If that is the case this year - we are bad again - then Mooney has really failed two years in a row. And the year prior, good regular season but team just seemed like it was not built for the post season and that played out. I actually am of the opinion that we "think" we have better players and better fit with the newcomers. AJ/Thomas/Johnston > White/GW3 and Daughtry > AP/can't even think of the gunner's name.

I think this schedule is just a grab for wins. Mooney is pitifully hiding behind all the narrative out there that the P4 schools will only schedule Quad 1's and 4's ( a lot of coaches latching on to this) yet we see good and medium and bad mid majors scheduling better. So I think the coaches may be optimistic on this team, and are probably hoping they can just rip off W's in the OOC. What's funny is both VCU and SDSU (two of about 8 or 10 mid majors we should be trying to model) got whacked a bit in there first exhibition - and listened to or read interviews from both coaches and both said they were happy to get wake up calls and could learn from it. Meanwhile, who the hell knows if we learned or got challenged, or got shellacked playing in an empty gym practice vs Mt St Marys?

I am at the point where I believe that our schedule quality is a reflection of the staffs opinion of our team
I think this has definitely been true in the past, but now I think they have worked themselves into a hole and can’t figure a way out.

If that is the case this year - we are bad again - then Mooney has really failed two years in a row.
If Mooney fails again like last year then he has to be fired, which is exactly why the schedule is so weak.

As I have said numerous times before, this year is the GW scheduling plan where you get a ton of OOC wins to offset your 0.500 in conference outcome and sell it as a launching point for the following year.

We have all seen this before. It is the latest of the “rebuilding” schemes.

100%. This is by far the reason our schedule is like it it. Mooney wants to save his job and he knows by scheduling a bunch of weak teams that he improve his record and sell us on the rebuild. It is disgusting way to operate a program that purports to be a flagship program but it is where we are.

1) I'd be shocked if we are as bad as last year even with a pitiful OOC schedule. In conference is another discussion.

2) I'd be even more shocked if Mooney would EVER be fired at UR due to poor performance. That should have already occurred.

Yes , I came to this realization about 10 years ago. He seems to have the PQ lifetime contract. Maybe he will decide to do something else, Hardt will be gone, and we have a basketball motivated AD and admin in place to hire a rising coach. One can dream, but for now we muddle along.

My official men’s season predictions:
OOC: 8-5. We lose to ECU, Furman, at Belmont, and 2 other teams at least one of which is a team we should have no business losing too.

In conference: 10-8, lose to VCU both times.

Win 1 game in A10 tournament and have no post season for a final record of 19-14.

I think that is how I see things going as well. Mooney and Hardt can come out in April to JOC via e-mail stressing the positive steps we have taken this year and how things are trending up in the MBB. Of course, anyone who knows anything about CBB knows that is complete garbage and our record was built of beating a bunch of nobodies but they will be able to convince enough of the casual fans and unfortunately and most importantly themselves that Mooney has the train heading the right direction and thus another year of Mooney ball is on the table for 2027.

The only thing that would make this remotely interesting is if we pull out another losing season, but even then they will spin us some tale of bullshit anyway. They will just have to spin it further and make it even more outlandish.

That would be the most boring 19-14 season ever.

I'm pretty close to this. I'll go 8-5 OOC, 8-10 in conference. One A10 tourament win, for a record of 17-16.

Losses to:
OOC: vs. W&M, Furman (neutral), @ Belmont, vs. ODU, @ Elon.
A-10: vs. GW, @ St. Bonaventure, @ St. Louis, @ GW, @ VCU, vs. George Mason, vs. VCU, vs. St. Bonaventure, @ Loyola Chicago, @ Dayton.

Furman getting their clock cleaned by High Point so far...giving up 55 points in the first half.

The "boringness" is deliberate. The less people interested in our program and its mediocrity the better from their perspective. Meanwhile our crosstown neighbors use every opportunity to say "look at me" as they are the complete opposite trajectory of us both in terms of on court success and how they view athletics as a vital extension of their university.

It starts with the schedule. This season and last season. Out of 26 OOC games:
Majors: 1 (Auburn).
Non D1 teams: 2.
Above average mid majors: 0
Average mid majors: Who knows? Who is our 2nd best game after Auburn? If I am being generous, I guess we can call Belmont, Bucknell, Furman, and ECU "average". So, maybe 4?
Below average: At least 20 out of 26.

WTF!!!! Seriously, WTF!!!!

Agreed. The schedule to me is the most glaring indicator of the unseriousness of our program. The do the bare minimum to build excitement, they refuse to set goals for themselves, they barely utilize the sports media world which is so important in our day. They keep a low profile intentionally because if they had a higher profile than more people might hold them to a set of expectations which they don't want to be held to.
