2025–26 opponent tracking

I don't think SLU is in any danger yet, but yeah, they should quit losing. And GW puts up triple figures against the Explorers.

Southern Virginia advances to the semis of their conference tournament and will face NC Wesleyan on Thursday.

2/24

Non-conference (1–1, 0–1 D-I vs D-I))
- Southern Virginia (D-III) 89, Mary Baldwin (D-III) 73
- Marshall 97, ODU 88

A-10
- Dayton 77, SLU 62
- GW 104, La Salle 77

This is a strange one sided take here. Take the VCU hate away, and watch again. So, the only cheap shot was by Evans? What about #1 for SLU who did exactly what Evans did? And Avila barely touched him? Avila used both hands to shove the guy into the chairs. Yes, bad move to steal the ball and bad by Evans with the shove. But, let's not excuse Avila and #1 here.
Jones got a flagrant 1 last night against Dayton for taking a shot at a Dayton players head instead of the ball.

He's dirty, however, even though they lost, SLU is the best team in the league. No doubt in my mind, for what it's worth.

vt, are you even watching the video or are you going off memory?
Avila barely bumped him. the "shove" was with the back of his right hand. no 2 handed extension.
Lewis fell into the chairs because of a little bump and his half court heave.
it all should have ended there. Evans comes in as 3rd man with the cheap shot. and yes ... SLU's #1 retaliated with one of his own.

I'm admittedly a VCU hater, but I have no love for SLU either. Avila is clean in this altercation. Evans and SLU's Jones escalated.

Avila didn't fully extend either of his arms. It was barely a push and the VCU player flopped to get the call. As for #1 SLU, he cleared Jennings out with one arm, Jennings barely moved in response. As opposed to Evan blindsided 2 handed full body shove in the back of a defenseless player.

Only one of those plays in that clip was meant to cause injury and harm and that was Evans shove.

Clean? Wow. I just watched again. Avila bumped him and shoved him. 100% unnecessary. And it looked like both hands to me. No question it was a cheap shot from Evans, and then Jones' cheap shot was as bad as Evans'.

What about Jones? His shove was as forceful as Evans'. Evans and Jones should have been suspended a game each. I would let Avila's shove slide, but still think it was a cheap shot and unnecessary.

by "clean" I meant "in this altercation".
he got a common foul for the bump ... correct call. nothing excessive. you really can't foul much softer. the guy fell.

If you throw a punch (cheap shot), expect one to be thrown back at you. Evans just took out an SLU player with a cheap shot, Jones saw that and responded accordingly. But agreed they both should have been suspended a game each. There is no room in the game for play like that. Honestly, if this was not the 2 two teams in the league, the A-10 might have handed out suspensions.

I can agree with that. I do think the bump and shove was unnecessary, but I can agree it wasn't that bad overall. As a coach, I would tell him just let the guy who stole the ball look stupid and stay away. Originally I said he dodged a bullet avoiding a suspension, but I got that one wrong. It was Evans and Jones who got lucky avoiding a suspension.

Crazy ending in the ECU/UTSA game. UTSA sinks two foul shots to go up by three with 7.2 seconds left, and they foul with 5.1 seconds left to prevent the potential tying three. ECU goes to the line for two shots, hits the first, then intentionally misses the second one back iron, ball gets tipped by UTSA out behind the arc where ECU gets it and gets fouled chucking up a three with 3.4 seconds left. ECU makes all three free throws to go up 82–81, and UTSA airballs a desperation three at the buzzer.

Our OOC opponents actually went 5–1 today, with the lone loss being The Citadel in a double opponent matchup with Furman.

Rhody trying desperately to keep us out of the pillow fight, falling to Bona by 18 tonight for their fourth straight loss. They're still a game up on us and have the H2H tiebreaker, but they're giving it their all.

Archie is 54-67 at Rhody. 9 wins, 12 wins, 18 wins and 15 wins this year.

Five 20 win seasons in 6 at Dayton, only one other 20 win season in 8 other years as a HC (4 at IU, 4 at URI.)

Still a outside chance they get to 20, as they have a favorable remaining schedule, but it looks unlikely unless they play in a CBI tournament or something.

It's basically those two, Self, Jones at Yale, Kampe at Oakland, and Mooney. The first three have winning percentages at or above 70%. Jones is like 57% but dragged down by some bad years early. He's probably closer to 65% or better in the last 12 years or so. Kampe is at 57% but transitioned his team to D1 years ago and that's not easy.

Mooney is such a damn outlier. Just an average coach allowed to stick around forever, like a squatter in an abandoned house.

Speaking of which, time for a daily check-in!

Southern Virginia's season came to end in their conference semis, as a late 19–4 run got them a one-point lead with 14 seconds to go but NC Wesleyan responded with a bucket to retake the lead with 8 seconds to go and then a couple of foul shots after a Southern Virginia miss made the final margin as a desperation three missed.

Overall not a great day for our opponents, though Charleston Southern had a decent win over Winthrop. Gardner-Webb is now 1–26 against D-I competition, but their final regular-season game on Saturday is against USC Upstate, the one team they've beaten this year!
