2025–26 opponent tracking

Just a few A-10 games on the impact docket tonight, including a couple of impactful results with SLU needing a three from Avila in the waning seconds to pull out the win over GW and move to 20–1, while Dayton falls to Rhody in OT for the Flyers' third loss in a row. Oh, and the Hawks roasted Loyola.

1/27

A-10
- Rhody 81, Dayton 76 (OT)
- SLU 79, GW 76
- St. Joe's 85, Loyola 64

Yeah, check out the responses on their official Twitter account. They want Grant gone yesterday, and they are far less polite about it than we've been here over the years. Mind you that's a guy who had them ranked in the top 5 not that long ago and has been there less than half as long as Mooney has been here.

Three A-10 games today, and the only one really of consequence was GMU–Davidson, with Mason coming back from a halftime deficit to prevail in a relatively low-scoring affair.

On the OOC side, Belmont just survived a stiff challenge from Valpo to pull out the one-point victory. Noyes had a couple of boards in four minutes on the court. Charlotte closed strong to force OT against Temple and ultimately came out on top in that one. And Southern Illinois got a solid 15-point win over UNI.

1/28

Non-conference (5–1 4–1 D-I vs D-I)
- Southern Virginia (D-III) 73, Mary Baldwin (D-III) 62
- Rice 83, ECU 77
- Charlotte 80, Temple 76 (OT)
- Belmont 78, Valpo 77
- ODU 75, Arkansas State 71
- Southern Illinois 65, UNI 50

A-10
- Fordham 64, La Salle 58
- Bona 87, Duquesne 79
- Mason 60, Davidson 52

Two double-opponent meetups tonight, with Elon edging W&M and The Citadel blasting VMI. Gardner-Webb unsurprisingly lost another one, while Furman got by Samford. And as noted in another thread, Chu and Radford did what we could not, taking down Charleston Southern. It's the sixth straight loss for the Buccaneers.

1/29

Non-conference (4–3)
- The Citadel 80, VMI 56
- UNC Asheville 69, Gardner-Webb 50
- Elon 79, W&M 76
- Furman 78, Samford 73
- Radford 84, Charleston Southern 75

Bonus exhibition opponent (1–0)
- JMU 73, Troy 64

I sincerely admire your dedication to this task. I long ago stopped wondering how our opponents performed.

But good on you bruv.

I watched part of that game and saw that Radford was killing them and was noting to myself just how bad the CS defense was. Radford guys just dribbled right down the lane for layups multiple times, and I thought it wasn't a fair game to evaluate Radford against such a terrible opponent.

Totally forgot that we played them. At home. And lost.

Yes EL, Charleston Southern looked pretty darn against us. Though Mooney won't play these three, will be interesting to see how they do vs common opponents.

This tells me we are much better off scheduling a D3 than Radford.

Well, I broke my hand today, so we'll see whether I can keep up on my posting over the next few weeks. 🥴

SLU absolutely torched Dayton today in the Arch Baron Cup, moving the Billikens to 21–1. And as noted, Loyola jumped out to a 15-point lead early on VCU, but the Rams steadily recovered from the deficit, tying it up at the half and pulling away in the second.

Just one game on the OOC side that saw Charlotte, which was picked last in the American preseason, handle Rice to take over sole possession of first place at 7–2.

1/30

Non-conference (1–0)
- Charlotte 80, Rice 70

A-10
- SLU 102, Dayton 71
- VCU 89, Loyola 75

Mooney laughed it off in yesterday's press conference when he was asked about McKillop buying beer and whether UR might do something similar. "We'll worry about the postgame beer before we worry about the during-the-game beer."

Meanwhile our Princeton English major is reading poetry to the student body:

I roam the sideline in my jacket of blue and pink,
No matter how hard I try I seem to stink,
Gone are the days of tournaments thrill,
Because my ass is getting kicked by this thing called NIL,
Louder and louder becomes the REAL FAN'S ire,
Perhaps it's time for me to retire.

That's actually pretty good
