We're officially doomed

we've won 10 of our last 40 A10 basketball games.
we just lost to Loyola Chicago ... twice.

nobody is "interested" in UR right now except agents who read we're going to up our NIL spend.
I’ll be watching the selection show to see how much the NCAA is going to add to our NIL this post season…

Apparently at least 500. Or it could be 1 agent texting him 500 times.

I'm gonna keep hoping, and say this is all part of the plan to "retire" after the A-10 tourney. First, Hardt's ridiculous timing saying Moon will return. Now, this ridiculous timing talking about how many agents have texted you. My "retirement" prediction is up to 19%. Let's go!!!!! Not wishing bad health here, but maybe the next part of the plan is to mention health.

So I feel like its pretty lame to blame the current shit show state of the program on lack of NIL. First off, as many have pointed out, our NIL level is almost certainly no lower than middle of the conference and above our entire OOC schedule. So if NIL is the expectation setter, I figure we should be somewhere around 23-9 this season. Second, I'd offer up that if we are looking at NIL as the amount invested in the program, we should weigh also the coach's salary where I feel confident we are not so middle of the conference pack. Thirdly, this is the first year (as others have pointed out) of school sponsored NIL and I suspect the first year we have fallen behind (at least by the significant amount PQ implied). If we were significantly behind before, I feel certain the word would have been leaked out just like it was this year. And our problems go back more than this year or even two years for sure!

I refuse to believe that the admin actually believes that this is what's wrong with the program is NIL spend and more spend will cure all. I also can't believe that Hardt wants to be getting ripped by alumni up and down the pecking order or defend when others raising funds for the University note shrinking donations cited to the desire for a new coach for Men's basketball (which hasn't happened from PQ but clearly has happened with a lot of "line" donors).

So the question I have been wondering is - - - why are they REALLY so freaking supportive? Can't help but feel there is a missing piece here somewhere (like who does he have pictures of doing something tawdry kind of thing). Or is it really as simple as they want to fire him, but PQ protects him? And if that's the case, are the pictures of PQ? Why is he so freaking supportive? Can't just be that he "likes" the guy. PQ didn't get rich by accepting underperformance from people because he likes them. So I repeat the great mystery of life question - - why are the powers that be (whoever that might really be) so damn supportive?

I like your optimism VT, but to me this is just him trying to deflect and focus on next year without having to answer any of the tough questions about two of the most embarrassing collapses in program history to mediocre/awful teams in back-to-back games.

It's the million (or $1.5-million) question. I'm like you, I can't believe that Hardt is THIS inept. I just can't. And yet...

Mooney must have the goods on someone. There's no logical explanation for any of this anymore.

I'm still holding onto the tiny bit of hope that these last two games may cause him to completely revisit his Friday proclamation. Here's what I would like to see from him this Friday.

"The University of Richmond has separated from head men's basketball coach Chris Mooney. This was an incredibly difficult decision because Chris has guided our program for more than two decades, is the all-time winningest coach in its history and has led it to great heights during his tenure. However, the team's performance last season and this season have fallen short of meeting the standards we have for the program, and the time has come for a change in leadership. We will begin a national search for a new head coach immediately. We wish Chris and his family the very best moving forward; they will always be part of the Spider family."

I agree....i am only 19% optimistic right now..:)

That is fantastic. In all seriousness, that is perfectly worded. With the firings happening all over, you could probably make some $ writing those.

I suspect you’re overthinking this. Entropy and laziness are surprisingly powerful forces when there’s no bulwark against either.

We have an AD who probably has remarkably little pressure to change things, and arguably has more pressure not to.

This would require the admin to have some level of humility, introspection, and willingness to admit fault.

They would rather double down and give Mooney $10 million in NIL before they go back on their commitment of him returning next year. They’ll feel that it would be embarrassing to admit they made a mistake. So they’re going to keep shoving these mediocre results down our throats whether we like it or not.

We are focusing on NIL, but ignoring the fact that if we are in any recruiting battle for a player, the opposing coach simply has to say, they went 5-14 in the A-10 the last 2 seasons..why would u want to go there? He could also add how terrible our system is both offensively and defensively. How guys have rarely improved while here the last 2 years. How we are a sinking ship and irrelevant. No Friday night ESPN games. Arena is half full. Terrible OOC schedules. And on and on. Seriously, who the heck wants to come here?

Players with the most greedy agents. As I mentioned in another post, the off season will probably be the most interesting part of 26-27. How many openings will be on the roster? Who shows up on the target list and who signs with UR? How much weaker can the OOC games be?

Great. A team full of greedy players, likely worried a lot about playing time, and not concerned with team chemistry or winning. What could go wrong?

+ you probably actually need to go to school and attend classes.

Completely agree. I think the coaching staff are putting all their eggs in the basket that “money talks and everything else walks”. So if another school competing with UR points out all those things and let’s say offers him $600K. UR can say “while all that’s true, you can come be a starter here and we’ll pay you $700K”.

This is not sustainable in the long term but Mooney and Hardt are probably banking on the hope, that we can replicate the 2023-2024 hear and getting lucky with enough good 1-2 year transfers because they need success now. That way they can kick the can down the road and justify the other remaining years on his contract. So I can see a 1 year transfer picking this place over other good programs if we offer more money.

The real problem will be convincing top high school recruits or guys like Argabright to stay here over the course of 3-4 years as a way to build the program, which was the philosophy Mooney had been hoping to implement. I think he recognizes that he doesn’t have another 3 years to win. These last 2 years have been so bad that the pressure is on for next year. I doubt pressure means make the NCAAs but probably a top 4 finish. So again, they can just keep kicking the proverbial can down the road.

that's an interesting list. without going back and looking, I always considered Vanderbilt an SEC cellar-dweller until NIL became a thing. kind of surprised they invested like this.
Hmmm, what else has Vandy done in the past couple of years. Oh yeah, they fired their underperforming coach and hired a stud up and coming mid major coach who breathed new life into the program. If you think, we are going to buy are way out of this mess with Mooney running things, you are sadly mistaken. He is a bad coach, he had zero solutions all year long (and for many years before that). The students and most of the fanbase can't stand him anymore and want him gone.

We might as well light this extra NIL money on fire and use it for warmth. If you or anyone else thinks handing it Mr. Excuse, Mr. No Accountability, Mr. we just need to play harder/shoot better is gonna fix things. It isn't.
