WBB 2026 Transfer Portal

Sections 204and5

Bench player
After rereading the 2026 commits thread, I realized I made a mistake in a previous post indicating that, barring any current players leaving through the portal, we only had one slot available to bring in a transfer. What I failed to take into account was the roster limit is 15 and we only had 14 players on the roster this year (credit to SF for being better at math than me). So with six leaving and 5 commits plus the unfilled roster spot we should have room to add two players through the transfer portal this year.

Just as on the men's side, some players have already entered the portal and here's a link to the site I used last year to track them:

One interesting name on the list - Jada Green. It looks like she's planning on playing next year but presumably not at Richmond.

Yeah - - we are going to need some help in the portal. Especially with some bigs. We have very little returning experience with any size. Ally, Ava, Rayne, Alicia, and Aneisha are the only experienced players back and they are all guards - - and with the exception of Rayne - - all smallish guards. I think Rayne is a lock to take over Rachels spot as the third guard/wing player with some size. But she is a totally different player than Rachel. Excellent defender which Rachel is not and she is also a better ballhandler and creator. She obviously isn't and isn't going to be, the shooter that Rachel is. Rachel is also very good down on the block and inside on cuts and she can finish near the bucket. We will have to see if Rayne has this element to her game. And Rachel is our 2nd best rebounder - - that part I think Rayne should be able to handle but hopefully as more of a third because we need someone to step into that 2nd rebounder role that Addie filled and nevr really got filled this year.

But with bigs, we need some experienced reinforcements. I think Campbell can help some next year but not sure she is ready for a major focal point role quite yet and after her, we don't have too much. And we need to find some scoring from a big spot for sure. Scoring is going to be a problem as it stands now all the way around. We will likely get to see a very different looking offense next year because our personnel is going to have a very different skill set. Adding Wright and Campbell alone though could make us a real problem defensively! We were pretty solid defensively this year but we can dial it up a notch or two with those guys. How we are going to score is a big question! So I think we need an accomplished big who can score (not real easy to find) or one big who is a role player and shooter (a la Dewey or even better Addie) and a 3/4 type who can really score!

Under Roussell we have had a player show huge improvement in their second year almost like clockwork. I’m not convinced Campbell will be that player but if I could choose one and make it so she would be it. Very athletic with a great motor but still a bit raw. Showed some promise early against W&M with 7 points in 8 minutes.

Good analysis. What we don’t know is whether any incoming freshman can step up rather quickly.
I think Gribble could help some, but the "problem" even with the incoming group is its short on bigs and especially light on bigs that I think might have a chance to contribute right away. Gribble and Fontana look like the most likely to contribute early. Gribble is definitely a guard. The little bit i saw of Fontana, she wasn't really played as a big, but she is certainly tall enough and seems to be listed there in all the info you find online. I liked what I saw, but just not sure she will be ready that early for the much more physical nature of college play etc. The other "big" is Coogen and while I have not seen her, everything I hear about her is that she may be more likely a redshirt candidate than a contributor out of the box (not suggesting we will redshirt her since Rousell doesn't seem real big on that except for medical - - just a comment on how ready she might be to help much as a frosh)). Tall but raw!

Obviously there will be a drop off but if we find a good PF I’m transfer portal won’t be as big as we think.

Starting line up:
1. Sweeney
2. Newell
3. Gribble (if she’s as good as expected and adjusts quickly to college fame)
4. Fontana ?
5. Transfer ?

Wright and Perschisetti likely to get minutes and maybe even starting role.

The key is weather we can get production out of players in the 4 or 5 spot. Hope Roussell stays and we give him the resources and NIL money to land impact transfers. If so, I think next year will be a reload year and not a rebuild.

I think Campbell gets a meaningful role. As discussed in a few other places, she is a candidate for a huge step up.

And I think Wright is a lock to start. She was coming on 2nd half of year and she is by far the most pedigreed member of the freshman class. I think she has star potential. She needs to a lot of work on her offensive game, but IMHO she is ahead of everyone on 17s list except for Ally.

And I think there absolutely needs to be an impact transfer!

And we can toss all of this if we have a coaching change! Who knows if anyone (returners or commits) leaves and what a new coaching staff might think.

I think Rayne will be great, but don't forget Ava.
