Spiders Soundoff

One thing that stood to me was Mooney tactfully saying the transfer portal and NIL are basically
the wild Wild West as there is little control. Why in the world has a group of colleges or conferences
not banded together and sued the NCAA for destroying amateur athletics. There are lots of people
who have lost interest in college sports and want nothing to do with it.
Probably because the ncaa was sued and lost this argument already, that’s how NIL came about.

If your impression is ”get the money out
of college sports and they’ll be fine”, I have unfortunate news for you. The whole model is built around money.

NIL is just legalized funding for Sports Boosters.

To state the obvious, college football/basketball are huge revenue generators. Huge.

Was not right in the recent past that players could not share in the wealth they created beyond room and tuition. Equally wrong that college players now chase dollars over a meaningful degree that would serve them throughout life. Not sure where the middle ground is, but we need to find it for the benefit of college sports and the players.

Current wild, wild West environment does not promote the long term interests of "amateur" sports or the vast majority of players.

As a follow up, outside of non revenue sports the term previously proudly heralded by universities as "student-athletes" should not be allowed. Retire it. Ban it. It is farcical in this era.
