Spiders Sound Off: Back from a break.

Happy to have a Spider podcast for the ride into work this morning. An after Easter treat.

Too bad Porter didn’t have to produce an episode as it would have provided some more content to discuss. I think Porter could have easily topped the “bonus” episode which he mentioned in this one, regardless of audio quality 😀

Mooney and staff have lots of spots to fill via the portal and based on history I have very low expectations. Definitely see a preseason ranking in the 12-14 range.

As far as graduation requirements, Mooney has been working with that requirement his whole tenure so I don’t think that is a major factor and a non-grad with 1 year of eligibility doesn’t seem like a key piece that Mooney’s system has been missing. The issue has always been getting players to thrive immediately in the Mooney system and it is something that simply doesn’t happen often. So a non-factor that can just be tossed in the convenient excuse pile.

As far as analytics go, I am certain that most schools use them so I don’t see the same advantage that Porter seems to believe in. Plus that is just an identification tool and closing seems to be the primary issue. Couldn’t get top tier transfers after good seasons, so how can we expect them after 2 very poor seasons.

More interesting to me will be what Roussell and staff do in the portal as I think that team has something to offer. I think that the most likely path to the tournament will be to win the A10 tournament and it sure looks like that may be easier to do than it has been the last couple years with the RI and GMU changes.

There will definitely be things to discuss in the next few months.

Go Spiders!

Enjoyed the podcast as always.

One thing struck me when discussing Mikkel's departure. I think Porter mentioned that we're going to see a lot of Simmons. While possible, I think CM has shown a propensity to bring in upperclassmen guards via the portal the past few years and plugging them into the lineup. So with no real experienced guards on this roster other than Argabright, I'm fully expecting that off guard will be filled by a transfer, and I'm also expecting a transfer PG as well.

If we are playing two sub 6 ft guards the majority of the time, that's not a good thing.
I think we're headed to the same roster construction problems we've had. if I'm right, Simmons is too good to play just 8 mpg behind AA. so Mooney will have to play them together some.

but yes, one of our 5 incoming transfers needs to be a starting level SG.
we definintely need a starting level C.
I know we want starters everywhere, but I could live with big forwards Daughtry, JRob and Caldwell.
Mooney loves Tanner but to win I think we all agree we need a starting level 3 as well.

needs everywhere. I assume Caldwell is one of our freshmen, but expecting a first year big to come in and start and be an A10 caliber starter from Day 1? Quinn could barely make it happen as a 4th year 7 footer. Grant did it as a redshirt freshman on a poor team. Geriot did it on a poor team.

Anyone else? I don't have expectations for any freshman big.

Mooney specifically said Caldwell and Simmons can play at the A10 level as freshmen.
I think Caldwell is a big forward and not a 5, but who knows how Mooney sees him.

Simmons is going to have to play as a back-up to AA. Because you ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT play too little guys on the perimeter together. We will get abused on defense.

Our starting 2 guard is not on the roster (nor in my opinion, are our starting wing and center either). I'd let Daughtry start at the 4 though if he remains.

Isn't Simmons under 6 feet tall - around 5'9"? We really could use a large guard on the court next to AA. That's once again tough to throw out there on defense..

I agree it's not ideal. but I loved his highlights. while maybe not likely, if even as a freshman he's one of our best players on both ends you have to make it work. I assume that's the concept he was sold when he committed.

I liked Roussell’s response when you mentioned no one expects him to make the NCAA tournament next year (for a 4th time in a row) and his response was something along the lines of “I’ll take you up on that challenge”.

What do you think Mooney’s response would be if someone says no one expects you to make the NCAA tournament next year (for the 2nd time in 16 years)? Would probably agree and talk about how hard it is.

Night and day difference between the two. Night and day.

Also to the point about a 5 who shoots for the women’s team. I agree that Roussell has gone for a more finesse style but I think if Woolfolk wants to come here, we have to take her. Like it was mentioned in the podcast, a great coach adapts to the personnel he has.
