Spiders Sound Off #42

Great episode as always guys. You two are gaining a loyal audience and I can tell you both that I always enjoy listening to you guys on my drive to work.

As far as the content, I know it’s hard to talk about things when we’re not doing well. Like Porter said, you all have recruits, prospective recruits and families listening to the pod too. I can understand wanting to be cautious in what you say, but I don’t think that should be a reason to avoid pointing out facts and reality. It’s okay to be honest. You guys are very respectful about it and we can all see the results with our own eyes.

As far as my own opinion, I think it’s clear to other posters at this point that I am frankly disgusted with the direction our program is heading. I have been complimentary in the past when warranted and will still defend a lot of those positive moments that have happened because our current situation should not diminish past accomplishments. But I don’t want to live in the distant past. I want to live in the present and right now things are looking bleak. We are heading towards our 3rd awful season in 4 years with no hope of next year being better. We just got demolished by a bad Davidson team at home whose own head coach has a worse record than Mooney. Something needs to change and the most obvious answer is with our head coach.

I think we all need to push in our own ways at this point. I think Saturday may have opened a crack that prior to it, none of us thought existed. It is up to all of us to care to act like frozen water in a crack and continue to push it open, bigger and bigger. A couple more results like last Saturday, I think may change some hearts and minds for the few people remaining who are supporting the program as is.

Tough episode to record since the premier program is not excelling. Thanks for the content as always.

To answer Tom’s question about when the Spiders had such poor output in the first half, see my post from Saturday:

I'd say that Saturday's 1H was the worst half I've seen Richmond play in my 12 years following the team, beating out the drubbing against Cincinnati in the Cayman Islands in 2017. The halftime score of that game was 40-14 and we shot 4-18 from the field, 5-11 from the FT line in the 1H. We ended the game with 20 turnovers, 7 from Buckingham.

I'm just now realizing that the 17-18 Cincy team ended the year ranked #6 in the country, so taking quality of the opponent into account, that game shouldn't even mentioned as one of the worst halves. It was just the most overmatched I'd ever seen us look to that point.

I found the game I was looking for for the prior low bar of the Mooney era - we scored 8 points in the first half at Dayton in 2007.

Proof that AI isn’t perfect. Gemini didn’t come up with that one. Not even breaking double digits- yikes. Even now Gemini likes 9 as the halftime score versus 8. Looks like a game that Ryan Butler has to remember. He did score in that worst ever half.

Remember this well. Was invited to a watch party at my former frat house 30 years after graduation. Went with a bunch of other old guys.

At the 15 minute mark of the 1st half the watch party ended and the focus became 30 year old war stories of the glory days.

Go Spiders!

It was so bad that the Dayton fans cheered when we scored in the first half. Seriously.

I haven’t listened yet but I don’t envy the position. I generally believe in speaking truth to power but that’s difficult to do, particularly if you hope not to alienate those you want to engage.
