I think in his case, it’s comfort in familiarity. Roussell has been pretty outspoken about how much he likes the fact he’s worked for Hardt practically his whole career and how much Hallock and the university has supported him and the program, which is great to here.
Also, for different people they see things differently as far coaching goes. Some people want to chase the name no matter what and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Don’t fault them though.
I think - or at least hopefully think - that Roussell sees this program in a way many of us said its potential can be. He’s getting a lot of national recognition individually, our team gets a lot of national respect as well. He’s bringing in top 100 recruits, is going to have a player drafted in the WNBA, can get into March madness as an at large. We schedule great teams and play in a multi bid conference. We are averaging 2,000 fans a game, talked about on social media, forums like this, and podcasts (shout out Spider Sound off). Those are things that are more aligned with power level teams and not the Bucknell’s of the world. If the university funds the program at the top of the A10, which I imagine we will, this program is a mid major by name only and can operate more like a P4 team. He may think about legacy and realizing that Richmond is a special place and cares about basketball.
I don’t think it’ll be comfort in that he’ll give up. He strikes me as someone who is self driven, motivated, up to the challenge. A guy who wants to grow not only as a coach but the program around him. He may have a vision of being like a Geno Auriemma and when he retires in like 20 years has taken a program that was once an after thought to heights it never dreamed about. For him to - hopefully - see Richmond as a final stepping stone is a huge testament to our program and university.
