Roussell Interview

My official worry list so far.

1. Northwestern
2. Penn State
3. Rutgers
4. Wake Forest (if it opens up)
5. Boston College
6. Pitt
1. Northwestern
2. Penn State — Hired someone else
3. Rutgers — Hired someone else
4. Wake Forest - Hasn’t opened up
5. Boston College
6. Pitt

Florida?

Bama coach was rumored for Northwestern, but the rumors seem to have cooled a bit there.

Maybe Florida, I don’t know but based on Roussell’s history of smaller more academically oriented schools in the northern/eastern part of the country, my above list would be the same fit and step up in competition. I threw in Penn State as well since he’s had some connection to PA.

I have to say I lol’d on the conveying of comfort comment by JOC.

Perhaps Mooney has been giving Roussell coaching career advice.
I think in his case, it’s comfort in familiarity. Roussell has been pretty outspoken about how much he likes the fact he’s worked for Hardt practically his whole career and how much Hallock and the university has supported him and the program, which is great to hear.

Also, for different people they see things differently as far coaching goes. Some people want to chase the name no matter what and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Don’t fault them though.

I think - or at least hopefully think - that Roussell sees this program in a way many of us said its potential can be. He’s getting a lot of national recognition individually, our team gets a lot of national respect as well. He’s bringing in top 100 recruits, is going to have a player drafted in the WNBA, can get into March madness as an at large. We schedule great teams and play in a multi bid conference. We are averaging 2,000 fans a game, talked about on social media, forums like this, and podcasts (shout out Spider Sound off). Those are things that are more aligned with power level teams and not the Bucknell’s of the world. If the university funds the program at the top of the A10, which I imagine we will, this program is a mid major by name only and can operate more like a P4 team. He may think about legacy and realizing that Richmond is a special place and cares about basketball.

I don’t think it’ll be comfort in that he’ll give up. He strikes me as someone who is self driven, motivated, up to the challenge. A guy who wants to grow not only as a coach but the program around him. He may have a vision of being like a Geno Auriemma and when he retires in like 20 years has taken a program that was once an after thought to heights it never dreamed about. For him to - hopefully - see Richmond as a final stepping stone is a huge testament to our program and university.

By no means am I comparing the 2 coaches. I just thought the line was humorous since it is a common catch phrase here on the Forum.

I think UR is a great place for Women’s college basketball and that Richmond is a great place to live. Glad that Roussell agrees.

Tami Reiss to Florida. I don't know what URI was paying her but it will be interesting to see how much she got to leave.

HM: Florida - hired someone else

Reiss/Florida reportedly owe URI a $900k buyout...$100k for each of the whopping nine seasons she had remaining on her contract. She had signed a 10-year deal after 2021–22 that had a clause automatically extending it by a year each time she won at least 20 games, and that had already resulted in three additional years added to the deal.

Have not see what Florida offered, just that URI did try to counter but couldn't keep her.

Surprising, at least to me...Alabama's Kristy Curry, who had been mentioned for the Northwestern job but denied it, is headed to South Florida.

There are some issues at Bama with Women's basketball and Northwestern is a terrible job and would take Curry awfully far from the areas she likes to and is successful recruiting. USF is looking to be a real factor and is planning on "paying up" (coaches and players). This is a tremendous get for a program like USF
