I had not realized Mike Rhoades coached RMC for 10 years before getting his job at Rice.
Also had not realized that in 3 years at Rice, Rhoades had 2 losing seasons and a losing record overall. Parlayed 1 good year into that jump to VCU.
I did realize he was probably the worst VCU coach they had in awhile, though he was mostly good/not great at VCU. Parlayed 1 big last year at VCU (27 wins) after 4 solid but unspectacular years and other 1 nice 25 win year, into the jump to Penn State, where he's had 3 losing seasons.
I'd be interested in Merkel honestly.

Likewise. I know we'll have some highly qualified guys with long D1 track records, and if we end up with one of them, great. But Merkel is a star and will be one for someone in D1 before long. Would prefer it be us.

It was unfortunate the Penn State's inept AD hired Rhoades away from VCU. VCU had finally found their coach who could match Mooney's mediocrity. Had we given them just another year or two, VCU would have found out the hard way. Of course, VCU would have canned Rhoades after a year or two of that.
Penn State could give 2 craps about MBB so he will probably last longer up there than he would have at VCU.
Match Mooney's mediocrity? I am not sure why this board thinks Rhoades did a bad job at VCU. He took VCU to 3 NCAAs in 6 years, had A-10 seasons of 16-2, 15-3, and 14-4, finished 1st twice and 2nd twice, and was 73-32 overall in the A-10. He won 27 games, the A-10 regular season title, the A-10 tourney title, and made the dance his last year there....why would they have canned him a year or two after that?

As a Penn State fan, I can sh*ttalk Mike Rhoades whenever I want. He has been abject disaster in Happy Valley. He is now trying to Mooney build a program with freshman and that is going predictably horribly in the portal era. They are two peas in a pod.
I agree it is not all his fault because Penn State treats MBB like a red headed stepchild. It is far below, wrestling, ice hockey, lacrosse, volleyball in sports that get better support up there. And obviously football, operates on stratosphere of its own and gets whatever it wants, whenever it wants it.
I doubt he would take the PSU job now with them at such a disadvantage NIL wise. 3 or 4 years ago, before the exploding NIL, he likely felt he could win there, and he very well might have had things with NIL not changed so much.

THEY JUST DON'T CARE. I get it happens, but just the entire operation is a complete shit show with how bad they schedule, run game day ops, avoid the media, etc etc.

Well, maybe they do. The AI agent used has been trained to think that our "brand" is to misspell, use the wrong date etc. So very likely the intern entered this correctly, ran it through AI - and AI determined that we intentionally mispell or misuse verbiage in the past.
