Argabright coming back (confirmed)

Step 1: I'd tell JRob to move his damned feet on defense and stop doing the AAU "let your guy blow past you and try to block it from behind" thing, and I'd enforce it every single day.

Step 2: I'd tell him to go after every rebound on both ends of the court no matter what. Other people can retreat to D after a shot goes up.

Step 3: 500 three pointers a day. I didn't think his stroke looked bad, I just thought he wasn't permitted to shoot or else he was coming out of the game.

I have a lot of belief in JRob as a player. I have almost no belief in Mooney's use of JRob as a player.
His shooting stroke looked fine, I agree that he probably had the red light on. Or was encouraged to find a better shooter if he was on the perimeter it more than 5secs remaining on the shot clock.

CM talked about getting bigger, possibly playing 2 big guys together. I think we've talked about it here more than he's really considered it before. I mean, I guess Grace played some forward.

also talked about the "contracts" not being real contracts but being agreements to pay a player ... but there's no weight on it that locks a player to UR. "and that's just the nature of it".

also said we're very excited about the 3 incoming freshmen, and that 2 of them can definitely play Atlantic 10 level basketball as freshmen. I assumed he meant Simmons and Cook, but JOC pushed him on it and he said Simmons and Dane Caldwell. but he said "Cook is a good player too so who knows".

questions were good and answers were thorough. worth a listen.
Play 2 bigs? We don’t even have 2 bigs.

WTH is he talking about. He’s never shown any real appetite to roll out that kind of lineup for more than a couple minutes.

Right We were told this before the past season with Walz and Beagle. A lot of coaches say they are going to do things but never follow through. But Mooney is just classic. Like recruiting Europe because their big men fit our style. Well the time to do that was the last 15 years before NIL. Now its very hard, as moon will tell you.

This is starting to feel like the new Dji for you...
Not really. I just want more talent on the floor. This board has said the same about Tyne and Tanner all year. What is wrong with me adding JRob to that list of guys who should not get a lot of minutes? I think all 3 would have a hard time getting minutes for the top A-10 teams, so I don't see anything wrong with not wanting big roles for them here.

correct, but we will have 2 bigs.
certainly nobody here expects he'll play 2 centers together. so if we sign a real big man, he won't play with Homenick.

likely when he says 2 bigs, he's considering JRob and Dane Caldwell as "bigs", while everyone on this board would call them forwards.
we'll probably (hopefully) play our incoming center transfer with those guys.

and I know ... JRob isn't very tall. he's still a big strong body and a guy we've been playing at the 5. so to Mooney he's a big.

I'm with VT on JRob. Just don't see a fit for him in the way Mooney wants to play basketball. I haven't seen one skill out of him other than he can jump really high that translates to success in Mooney ball. Does he shoot well? No. Does he rebound well? No. Does he defend well? No

JRob is just a sophomore though and he does have intriquing athletic ability, so am willing to see him back for 1 more year, but he HAS to do one of the 3 (shoot, rebound, defend) really well next year. Curious as to what folks think that one thing could be.

with his athleticism, there's no reason he can't be a great defender & rebounder. it's on him and the coaches to make that happen.

College basketball is filled with guys with athleticism. Not all will be even good defenders or rebounders.

I would say rebounding and filling a lane on the break. Again, up to Mooney to accentuate these and use him correctly. After 20 years, Mooney said he came around on importance of offensive rebounding, but in actuality was just a comment and maybe it was highlighted in pre-season for a few weeks without much follow through.

JRob would be a good vcu player. Mooney doesn't play that way, so the fit here seems off. But then again, I would rather we started playing that style instead of Mooney's style.
He doesn't seem like a VCU player at all to me. He would need to make 3s, handle better, play better defense, rebound better, and shoot FTs better to play for them. Other than that.....:). Their top 9 minutes played guys all made at least 19 3s this year, and one of them didn't even get into the game against UNC, when they shortened their rotation to 8. VCU had a bunch of versatile guys playing for them. Do you really think JRob would take any minutes away from any of their top 8 who beat UNC?

Same with Tyne and Tanner. They couldn't play for VCU either. We need to get better players if we want to be a top A-10 team, instead of trying to find a way to make players like Tyne, Thomas, and JRob work for us.

We are a super far stretch from VCU when it comes to talent level. Depressing.

Bingo. AA is our only legit A-10 player on the roster. Other guys are bench guys at regular A-10 programs and really deep bench guys at places like VCU and SLU. Maybe Jrob and Harper could be decent A-10 starters in a couple years if all of the cards fall right, with their development.

And the sad thing is, outside of those AA, those are the only 2 guys on our roster we are pinning any type of hope too. The rest of the roster is this:
Tanner: non-athletic wing player, started for the last 2 years and got benched each of those years because of lack of performance
Tyne: 2 year starter that most have soured on, not a good PG in our system, too small to be a SG in our system next to AA
Daughtry: Also a senior, really good offensive skills, but gets burned all of the time on defense. Never seems to get more than 20 mpg either here or Indiana State for that reason. Also got benched for showing up late to a walkaround so perhaps so internal issues
McGothlin: Redshirted and then proceeded to get walk-on minutes, had a mysterious injury that wasn't talked about and basically didn't play all year
Richardson/Homenick: Another two of Mooney's redshirt project players, so who knows but we all know the track record with the Mooney redshirt. Neither has been mentioned at all by Mooney, so that is not a good sign either.

This is the state of our roster. Probably the most devoid of talent it has every been since I've been a Spider fan.
