Media talking points - Chris Mooney by the numbers

My post yesterday in the game thread I forgot still have game(s) left in conference tourney. Correcting myself Mooney should be moved to an office position day after final game.

Don't know if mentioned here but see Schmidt is retiring/fired from Bonny?

College basketball coaches fired: Updated list of schools making changes

Read below from above USA article .....
Schmidt had been at St. Bonaventure since 2007, where he went 339-253 at arguably the toughest job in the Atlantic 10 Conference. That run included NCAA tournament appearances in 2012, 2018 and 2021. Prior to Schmidt's hiring, the Bonnies had been to the NCAA tournament just once from 1979-2007. At least tougher than here for Mooney.

Anyway like I posted hadn't watched much Spider action all season. Though recall last minute of Spider action witnessed on TV was in
second half of VCU game. Can't even recall score at time but Spiders went on 11-0 run and Mooney calls TO. Turned off the TV.

should I combine the A10 finals appearances (2) and A10 semifinals appearances (5) into one line item?

At present listing them separately, it almost makes it sound like he has made semis/finals 7/21 times. He has not because you have to make the semis to make the finals. Five semis appearances, two of which led to finals appearances. 5/21.

Yup, combine that, you definitely run the risk of misinterpretation for those not following along.

Mooney has had 3 final appearances, winning 2.

if anyone can find where Moon's winning % ranks amongst all A10 coaches in history, please lmk. Basketball reference only shows overall winning % where Moon's .549 ranks 43rd all time amongst coaches in the A10.
I kind of did a brief look. Here's Regular Season and Playoffs
He's 14-13 vs. Mark Schmidt
1-4 vs. Kim English (Mason)
5-6 vs. Paulsen (Mason)
2-7 vs. Anthony Grant (Dayton)
4-9 vs. Archie Miller (at both stops)
9-6 vs. Dr. John
3-5 vs. McKillop Jr.
9-6 vs. McKillop Sr.
3-5 vs. Lonergan
4-8 vs. Rhoades
8-9 vs. Martelli Sr.
0-2 vs. Martelli Jr.
3-4 vs. Majerus
3-5 vs. Shaka in conference
6-8 vs. Travis Ford (both stops)
0-5 vs. Will Wade
6-6 vs. Dunphy (both stops)

Other than that, he feasts on weak teams like Fordham and UMass

So, winning record against 3 coaches, two of whom have been let go. No wonder his peers love him.

That’s the one I was wondering about…

In my opinion, you should not combine them. Makes the record look more impressive than it is. Fact of the matter is making the finals vs. making the semi finals doesn’t mean anything differently. Just means you lost one game sooner. Only thing you should keep track of is championships won and NCAA at large appearances.

looking over Moon's record some more, I think we have 5 top 4 A10 finishes in his 21 years? And in 3 of those years, UR was bounced in first game in the A10 quarterfinals.

Also, three of the five top 4 A10 finishes were in the 4 years Kevin Anderson was on campus. Others were Kendall's senior year and the great first game flameout with the #1 seed in 2024.

Was in Senior Kendall or Senior Cline? Wasn’t Kendall a 5 seed? And Covid?

So in 15 seasons, Kendall, Cline, Covid, King?

Kendall senior year was in BK and we lost to VCU in QF after getting the double bye. Kendall slipped and got called for travelling, ANO didn't get a key defensive rebound that could have almost sealed the game, we lost to VCU, rinse and repeat. I think VCU won 4 in 4 days as the 5 seed to win A10, IIRC.

Cline / SDJ senior year we beat GW in a QF game when Khwan Fore stole the ball on GW's game winning attempt possession - did we have a double bye that year? You could be correct, but I don't recall. We then lost to VCU. Rinse/repeat.

Didn't count Covid year bc there was no A10 tournament, but sure, probably should count since we did get a 2 seed but there are no results to pair it with, so...

We beat 6 seed GW on a Friday in our first game, so were we 3 seed?

I understand not counting 2020 as NCAA year, since it was far from certain. However it would have been difficult not to be a Top 4 seed if there was an A10 Tournament.

yes - a 3 seed in 2017 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Atlantic_10_men's_basketball_tournament

The game against VCU was another one of those terrible last possession games - our best player (Cline) nor the guy on a heater that game (Buck) never touched the ball and SDJ shot a prayer over an NFL tight end that didn't go in. Think moon got a tech in OT there too for calling a TO we didn't have late in the period.

Yes, we were 3-seed with double bye in 2017. And 2-seed in 2020 when all the A-10 got in was the pillow fight before the world shut down.

If can confirm, pls add to ongoing list.
