David Thomas - Transfer Commit - 2 years of Eligibility

Have to say this is the one transfer that I don’t see getting much playing time year 1 as I expect Tyne to Johnson to get most of the minutes. Apparently Mooney and staff wanted him the first time around and didn’t get him so I keep wondering who they picked up instead. Maybe White. That being said the podcasters liked what they saw (listen to episode 3), so we will see if Thomas can take minutes away from Tyne.

Again, this is a guy I hope gets PT and shines. Really think his freshman year making the huge jump from HS to D1 and shooting 40% from 3 is more indicative then getting thrown into a rost full of transfers at Depaulful and having to play sporadic minutes vs BE. White showed up day 1 in a bulky knee brace and looked gimpy as hell all year. This guy is solid and looks to have some game. I am expecting some big things.
OK , I'll admit I kept hoping for big things from GW3 and White last year, but IMO Thomas has already shown he can play based on year 1 in D1.

A recurring theme on the Forum has always been “best players play”, but who those players are hasn’t seemed to come to light fast enough especially last year. Hoping that the “new” focus to accelerate the process in Summer practice pays dividends.

I haven’t seen Thomas play and perhaps he was lost in the shuffle last year at DePaul. Obviously, there’s plenty of room for improvement after last year’s major regression. I am liking the reports that the team is much deeper as competition in practice is a great thing.

The point I was (poorly) trying to make in my poll was that 40% from 3 is quite an achievement for a true freshman. A guy on Twitter came out with grades for every transfer I d1. When I'm in front of my laptop will post it. Our guys all graded well on offense and overall, but as we have noted were not very well thought of on defense.

Likable, positive guy. Reading up on some of the preseason articles and team evaluations for college hoops, more and more it seems teams are focused on having a four guard rotation. Having 4 guys that can play and contribute and little drop off from the starters. At this point, I am kind of thinking Lopez will need to man the wing spot - just seems like Moon is slow playing McGlothin. He should have been pushing the envelope from day 1 to try to speed up his development - but I digress. I do think Thomas can be a real solid piece in the guard rotation. If we hit on Argabright too - I think we have the possibility to have 4 pretty solid guards.

I know a lot of people were down on Thomas after the exhibition and scrimmage. I am liking what I am seeing. Have not checked the numbers but his shot the last couple of games looks like that of a 40% 3pt shooter. Which he was. For an entire season. As a TRUE FRESHMAN!

Also like his ability to use his strong frame on the break and close to the basket to ward off defenders. So far looks like a guy that is very positive teammate, and can contribute.

Again, like almost the entire team - we have to see how this translates to the A10 schedule. Hope more like the guy at Mercer than at Depaul. So far he is looking like the player at Mercer, looking good.

OK, looked it up: Thomas shooting 50% from 3, Johnston 47.6 % and AJ 37.5%. AJ had ELITE shooting splits last year. So far this year he is 45%FG/37.5 3pt/87.5 FT. So he is right in line.

Good stuff by all if can maintain near these numbers.

I feel like AJ gets a little space due to his driving ability. Then probably the other team sees his form and thinks "let's see him do that again".

They backed up these numbers again tonight.

I do think he benefitted from knowing he was going to get a lot of minutes. I just checked Kenpom. MR THOMAS moves up to number 4 in the country in 3pt FG%!!!!!!

I don't think Tyne has necessarily done anything to lose his starting job, but to me David Thomas went out and took it from him last night. I guess it remains to be seen if Mooney feels the same or not, but I really hope he's willing to give Thomas a shot at keeping that spot and moving Tyne down to a backup (but still significant) role.

Agree here. I like Tyne, think he can be a good contributor........But..........for his size and quickness, is really not a great playmaker. AA is just naturally much better at this, and AA draws fouls at an ELITE level, as KP stats back up. Tyne is shooting a good percentage from 3 so far. I don't think Thomas is going to continue to shoot 61% from 3, but he was top top top 3 point shooter as a true freshman with good usage, so this is not surprising to me at all - per my ad nauseum posts indicate. But Tyne's problem as have also pointed out, for being so small (smaller than listed) he does not have that one or more elite skill like a Gilly or KA.

It was one game. However, I think Tyne will be out for Saturday’s game as well so we will see what a second game may reveal. In terms of starting, I don’t think that matters all that much as the substitutions are going to come fast and furious. There is always room for a high volume, high make 3 pt shooter so glad to see this output from Thomas. No doubt that the Spiders have scoring options this year and that is a very welcome change. I do think that Thomas brings some extra toughness on D as well.
