Game thread - @ VCU Tuesday 1/27 7pm CBS Sports Network

@sman - if you have the game on DVR, please watch the first defensive possession when he enters the game. He ball watches flatfooted, his man slides over for an uncontested 3, which he easily drains from the left wing. That happens all the time - he stares at the ball, cannot recover when his man moves, if he tries, he is unable to box out bc he's moving the wrong direction in a scramble. He missed a shot in 2nd half and kind of stood under the rim, didn't run back, odd man situation and vcu got another 3. These were the most glaring, but if you just ignore the ball and focus on him on defense as you watch the game, you see these plays all the time.

“We got a girly kick to the shins in” - peak comedy bruv, legit lol

And ftr, Hallock isn’t my boy, we aren’t doing brunch on sundays. I just happen to know him through my wife who works at UR. I think he cares. Can’t say if he cares enough to buck a 50-year trend of not firing a coach.

Thanks just a little needle re: Hallock. My interaction is very limited but I will say he came off as a Mooney defender & not someone who will buck the status quo. Now I don’t expect him to say a whole lot in that direction with sitting coach but there can be nuance to it & that was my impression.

Certainly not with 3 years left on his ridiculous contract. But if he really did care it’s a drop in the bucket financially for U of R to move on.

We can all agree at least we are not Loyola. That's what happens when there is a bad coach and the team quits on the coach.

VCU isn't that good. We need to find ways to not get to such slow starts. I think we take them at home on Valentine's day.
I wish the team would quit on this coach.

I think there are 2 reasons why Mooney retains some levels of support.

1. Mooney has been here so long that some of these donors consider Mooney to be a friend and perhaps they are actually friends now. So, it makes it really difficult to ask for your friend to be fired or even to admit your friend is not really great at his job.

2. Some have defended Mooney for so long, it makes it really hard to say, you know what I was wrong, the program is not getting better, it is really stuck in a rut. So, they just continue to defend him and in many respects they are defending themselves despite all of the mounting evidence against that point of view.
I'm guessing that your 2 reasons are spot on, 97. Most very wealthy individuals, unless they inherited their fortunes, are extremely competitive and that's how they became that wealthy. They would never put up with average or below average performances by subordinates or employees in their businesses, so one would think they would be the loudest calling for change. But now they are such buddies with Mooney they can't bring themselves to "betray" him, or they are so competitive or proud that they can't admit they have been or are wrong about Mooney's competence as a coach.

Or they realize there is sadly a ceiling in today's life as a mid major. I think it's a shame about what game has become in same regards. Like did you see Kentucky's players chant "For the Money" or something to that extent as they take the court to be down by 20 in the first half??

Maybe they just say would we rather have someone who is a good rep of university, teams are generally competitive, and was good to the University when he could have become the coach at GT, Rutgers, or BC.

The play that really bothered me was when Daughtry turned it over, jogged back on defense, and a guy blew right by him for the alley oop slam. And, I don't think you should ever only attempt 15 3s. I don't care what the other team takes away. Teams try to take away 3s all the time and teams still shoot 20+ of them.

Our guys chant "For the Mooney."

noticed that live as well last night - bad body language and I really like his positivity when things go well for him and the team

did you guys catch on the broadcast that they told Martelli that job requirement #1 is to beat Richmond?
But at this point, we've come to realize (not accept) that it's a given that VCU is going to beat us. The exception is only about 25 pct. Obviously our admin and powers that be are comfortable with 25 pct because it's perpetual, and they continue to do nothing about it.

Doesn't take long for anyone with supposed say so to succumb to idea of coach for life.

Comfort over competition/accountability is the culture of our men's basketball program
Oh boy, don't get me started :). Some on this board may remember this as my rant for a couple of years. Agree completely. The number one attribute of our program, is that of the Culture of Comfort. Coaches are comfortable, no expectations, no threat of job turnover, good pay, no challenges in the media, no stress. The only non comfortable event I can think of was the billboard.

Yes, obviously they have embraced this loser mentality. ITS HARD.

They want easy.

They want comfort.

He wouldve been fired from those 3 programs within 2-3 years if he accepted any of those jobs.

That’s one of those talking points that are vague and admin has thrown out there, the same way they generically have said something along the lines of “mid majors can’t schedule good games anymore” as an excuse which blatantly is contradicted by anyone looking at the facts. Nearly every A10 team had scheduled tough games. Davidson who was just as bad as we were last year was in the battle of Atlantis 2 years ago and a great tournament this year. They hosted Saint Mary’s at home and played at Kansas. Then you see with us declining games that would be good opportunities like JMU. Yes, JMU is not good this year and yes we cannot 100% predict how good a team will be. But they are a heck of a lot better option than VMI, Citadel, Gardner Webb, and D3 Southern Virginia.

Then your statement about ceiling of mid majors. Saint Louis literally fired a coach 2 years ago, and in his 2nd year Josh Schertz has them at 20-1 and #21 in the country. George Mason was a perennial bottom feeder and Tony Skinn in 2 years has them at 18-2. Look at Ryan Odom, Will Wade, etc. and what they’ve done at VCU. Dayton was top 5 team in the country 6 years ago. Not to mention mid majors doing well in other conferences.

So to make this all encompassing statement that mid majors have a ceiling is just not true. And even if there is a ceiling, it’s a heck of a lot higher than where we’re at right now. Then you have people like JOC rather than pointing out these things and question our admin when they give these vague and overgeneralized excuses, chooses to ask questions like whether Richmond’s NIL can support being competitive in the A10. It’s flat out ridicuous.
Maybe they just say would we rather have someone who is a good rep of university, teams are generally competitive, and was good to the University when he could have become the coach at GT, Rutgers, or BC
Our teams were competitive in the past, even in years where we did not make the NCAAs. That’s why I’ve argued that while NCAA is the most important metric, it’s not the sole metric of success. It’s about trajectory which right now is not looking good at all. We are not close to fielding a competitive team at an A10 level and next year isn’t looking any better. This has become a pattern.

Mooney has done more for vcu over the years than Richmond

Lol. This would be an amazing billboard. Since ppl flip out over the word "Fire" more than school districts flip out over cold and snow.

It's a shot but with some subtlety. I mean he's truly gotten the school more NCAAs, and going on 7 vcu coaches bigger jobs and bigger contracts.

I'm in this time for funding
