Game Thread - St. Joes @RC - Sunday 1/11 noon - USA network

At the risk of being accused of being a family member of Chris Mooney or having intimate sexual relations with the coaching staff, this one is mostly on the players. They didn't play well at all in the first half, didn't shoot well the whole game, and generally couldn't make the big play on offense when presented.

Mike Walz: terrific kid, incredibly smart, I'm proud of him as a Spider, physically built like a brick shithouse, mentally fragile. There's no scenario in the entire history of the world where you make 2 three pointers from the top of the key in the final minute to get your team into position to win, then get the ball at the top of the key and an open shot with less than 2 seconds left, and you pass it. To anyone, open or covered.
I could not believe how many we clanked off front of rim. Why so many just short?

Did you see the piece on the news about his heart situation. Hopefully not related to that but he's not going to be able to play 40 minutes a game.
Did something change about his heart situation in the last week?
He averaged 13 minutes the last 2 games after averaging 23 the three before that.

maybe he had a flashback to the Furman game?

Thank you! Exactly my thought. Horrible coaching. Should never paint your team into a corner like that.
The refs mostly were letting the guys play, so I wasn’t surprised at how few fouls we had. But sweet Jesus, you better be telling your guys to get aggressive going for the ball or defending when you have fouls to give and are down in a close game.

The coaching decision I couldn't figure out was Mooney's putting 4 guards in the game after we cut the lead to 2 with about a minute left. We basically had 4 6 foot guys and Walz out there in a situation where we needed a stop. This strategy had 2 flaws.

1. Mooney did this to try and get a steal. The problem is our press sucks and it is really easy for 6'6 guys to simply pass over our pressing small guards, which they did with ease.
2. It left extremely vulnerable to an offensive rebound, against a very lengthy St. Joes team, which again after playing 28 seconds of really good defense, St. Joes got off a bad shot but we had Tyne trying to get a rebound against a 6'8ish player, which resulted in the easiest stick back of the night.

He further continued this line-up for the rest of the game when we had to foul, putting Johnston on the inbounder. Every other coach in the planet brings a big guy into to defend the inbound pass, but we decide to put 6 foot Johnston on the inbound, which is essentially a waste of a player, as the 6'8 guy inbounding the ball just easily passed over him.

Mooney's been here for 21 years and these are the coaching decisions we get with the game on the line.

AA was the postgame interview and he said that his sense was that the team thought this would be an easy win at him after the good play on the road. Always a recipe for disaster.

My one positive comment for the game is Will Johnson. He definitely played hard and finished with 7 rebounds which is proof in the stat sheet. Otherwise, it was easily the worst game I have watched this season.

Tough loss. Mooney made several decisions down the stretch that really cost us.

56 seconds left, down by 2, he chose to put in a lineup with 4 of our smaller guards (AA, MT, WJ, DT). I assumed we were going for a steal, would foul if we didn’t get it and sub in to defend/rebound. No steal, no foul, and that possession ended with an offensive rebound put back by Joes to put us down 4. Did not like that lineup decision at all. Did not give us a chance for a stop/rebound.

Then after Joes made front end of 1 and 1 with seven seconds left, he uses his last timeout. Would have much preferred we save it to use at half court and draw up a play with 3-4 seconds left. Ended up with Tyne throwing up a last second prayer instead.

Two crucial moments where I feel Mooney made bad decisions.
You could see we had no chance to get a rebound with that lineup. We had Walz chasing a guy near half court and Tyne was underneath near the guy who got the offensive rebound.

We had the momentum and were playing at home. I wanted to see us driving to the basket on the last shot to try for OT. Lopez had a rough game, but I wanted him in there at the end. If they were gonna guard close there, he draws fouls and makes his FTs. If they weren't gonna guard too close for fear of an AND 1, he can attack and make it at the rim.

This is unreal. Easy win?? We have already lost to Furman, E freaking Lon, Ch Southern and I think we are still giving up points to GW as I post this. Definitely a bad look on the coaches when you hear something like this, but where are the leaders to make sure this doesn't happen?

We played 12 guys, 10 of them played 13 or more minutes. I just don't like all the subbing in and out, and see no evidence this strategy is helping us at all. We have lost to Furman, Elon, Ch Southern, and St Joe's, and got routed by GW doing it this way.

I wish we would find our top 8 or 9 and let them play. I gave Tyne and Tanner some credit last game, but they just don't do enough all around stuff to be factors out there. 40 combined minutes and 1 assist. Tyne's three 3s were nice, but what else does he do, and his size hurts us. Tanner has way too many quiet games.

This is where I will get on our recruiting again. We brought in 2 recruits 2 years ago, redshirted them to "get them ready" and neither can even be our 9th man in the rotation? This year, Aiden has played well, but no other freshman can be our 9th man in the rotation?

Unfortunately, this team looks flawed. We all know about the lack of defense, but looking at the 8 I mentioned above, all have other issues preventing them from being all A-10 type players.

Yeah it was an easy win alright. So
was E freaking Lon and Ch freaking southern. Chris Freaking Mooney

In 17 games this year, Tyne has 26 total assists, 19 total rebounds, and only 15 FT attempts, and 12 of the 17 games, he hasn't even attempted a FT. That's low impact, and 20 mpg for this production is way too many.
