Game Thread - GW @ RC New Years Eve 4pm ESPN+

IMO that's backwards. If you played for me you would earn time on the floor based on how you play defense. Mooney has concocted an offense so complicated that he has to spend all his time teaching it and not spending enough time on teaching defense. We scored 85 points and lost by 14. What's wrong with that picture?

I’ve never really understood CM’s obstinance around maintaining a starting five. If he has a bunch of guys who are starter quality, then de-emphasize it and reset your starters with each game based on who practiced great or feels healthiest or on whose zodiac sign is rising in Jupiters shadow.

Just get your best five out there. Please.

I think someone mentioned a while ago. Just have a practice to figure out the best five players we have. Once we figure out the best players they should start each game. And you should allow these players a couple of minutes to form chemistry on the court. Instead we try to play 12 guys in a game. It’s nice to have depth but some players are clearly better than others.

For anybody keeping score at home.

Johnston was +11
Tyne was -22 (not a typo)
Daughtry & Argabright were both -16
Lopez was -15
Walz & Beagle both -4
Tanner was +4

Goes to show how atrocious our defense really was. Our best offensive players are such awful defenders that they’re still net negatives when they’re on the floor. This is going to be another long season of Mooniocrity.

The constant subbing in and out is hurting more than helping.

1. No one can get into a rhythm, offensively or defensively.
2. We sub at the 18 minute mark. No one should need a break 2 minutes in. This immediately disrupts our starting 5.
3. Our defense is nonexistent, so no reason to sub based on defense. Keep our best offensive guys (see #4) on the floor.
4. Aiden, Johnston, Lopez, Daughtry, and Beagle need to start and play a lot of minutes.
5. I have seen enough of Tyne, Walz, and Tanner. We can bring them off the bench, but they do not need so many minutes.

This was an embarrassing performance. To not have any answers defensively for 40 minutes is beyond ridiculous. Some teams are better defensively than offensively and some teams, like ours this year, are better offensively than defensively. So, start our best offensive guys and leave them out there for awhile. Maybe we score enough early to put a little pressure on the other team, which could help our defense. Just stop with the constant subbing. Just stop.

The subbing makes no sense, it seems like if you make a good play you’re more likely to come out - Thomas comes to mid today when he drove and scored on a pull up and got fouled and then got subbed on his made free throw.

AA, Johnston, Daughtry, Lopez, Beagle (but Beagle has struggled against real bigs in the last 2 games) are the best five. Walz, Thomas, AP are your subs. Sprinkle in Tyne and Tanner and Robinson when you need it. Also need to figure out something other than the high post 5 running the offense - it don’t work with Beagle or Walz.

The subbing after two minutes is insane. Just shows he does not think those guys are his best. But instead they get the "loyalty" start and the team has to try to readjust right away. Crazy.

So the Walz story to me is all about Mooney coaching. He drills virtually all young guys for one thing above all else - - make no mistakes in running his precious offense. Run it right and you are gold in his eyes - - - but run it right doesn't require you to actually make plays. In fact trying to make plays may be detrimental to your standing with coach because to make a play, you may have to get out of system. So Walz spent his early years learning to play "the Mooney Way' but not learning to make plays. Now he is in a position that we need him to make plays and he has had that whole thing bred right on out of him! And he is far from the first who is seemingly developing only to plateau and go backward when asked to do more. You can't develop players this way. Players has to learn to play and learn to make plays - - - ofter by not making them and understanding why it didn't work out instead of simply not trying to make them!

And the OOC is just another example of this way of coaching. No one learns to make plays against all that slop because we don't need anyone to and we all can run the system and do it right and win. But then we see real opposition and we cant run the system or make plays!
Turn Walz loose

I see Mooney has taken away Daughtry rebounding ability. 0 rebounds

On one play yesterday he was driving to basket and was within a few feet. Looked like easy layup or dunk. He passes it outside. Have seen this forever with him. So frustrating to see this.

Once in blue moon he has an aggressive and also a scoring night. But once in a blue moon is not enough. Very complacent player.
Exactly. He's 6'10", seems to be strong and very athletic, but many times he gets the ball under or around the basket he acts like he's 5'10" instead of 6'10" and passes out for a 3 point shooter.

Everyone gets subbed after a made free throw. If we are shooting free throws, someone goes to the scorers table.

However the everyone gets tired after 2 good plays and must be subbed for the next player and his 2 good plays, makes little sense. It is not like a long run or catch in football, you don’t need to catch your breath after a good basketball play.

At least he passed out to 26% three point shooter Tanner…

Much better than driving to the basket with no defender…

I beat this drum for years. I used to coach travel teams, and typically started my five best defenders - at that level were typically the top players too. But, I think it sets the tone for the game - to say you are not going to get into a rhythm and you are not going to have it easy today. I think too often other teams get what they want and the confidence established early on. Mooney has had some good metric teams on defense, just look back to two years ago with Dji, Bigs, etc. So I think it is very much a personell thing. But I do think when we don't have the guys on D, we don't enforce it enough. I would complain about certain guys being a turnstile out there, but they would not get yanked. I do think the defensive effort is something you have to enforce and have as an expectation to see the court.
But the approach now seems to be not to put the best players on the court the most period. Crazy. It's a tough new world of NIL, and I do understand the loyalty aspect, but by now you should have narrowed the rotation and have guys set into their roles. Seems we are far from that.
