Game Thread - GW @ RC New Years Eve 4pm ESPN+

Unfortunately, nothing that I haven’t seen many times before. Spiders haven’t been able to guard the 3 since the Julius Johnson days. We knew the post was going to be a problem, but Walz is playing worse instead of better this year. Think he is a great young man, but this year especially he is living up to the high school scouting report we were given I think by PhillySpider when Walz signed at UR.

The new twist is playing nearly everyone on the roster along with totally incomprehensible substitutions. Now it isn’t only timeouts that kill good runs by UR, but substitutions too. I have no idea what the staff and Mooney are doing and I believe they don’t know either.

All that aside, this game doesn’t change anything for me. I expect a 0.500 record in conference and as I mentioned on another thread, I expect a 3-3 record to start. If the Spiders lose against Fordham, I will change my tune.

No doubt that the last 2 games have not been fun to watch, but my hope is that now that the games will be returning to a normal cadence and the holidays are in the rear view, we will once again see the fun to watch Spiders. However, this doesn’t mean I expect any sort of postseason play. Why would anyone? I will be rooting for a miracle though. Go Spiders!

We remember (was at both the KY and Iowa wins) and they were good times for sure ... just curious, do you make it to RC much? Would love to have a chat or a beverage at some point with you since I am a centrist in our ongoing situation and would be a good chat ...
I think my next RC visit will be against VCU--work looking busy in January. I am going up to Fordham Sunday. I'll keep you posted!

No reason to be snide.

Remember beating Purdue, Kentucky, Iowa?? Remember beating VCU at VCU when they were in top 25. Remember beating Vanderbilt in NCAA tournament?? Yeah, have a bad year or two and the wolves are out.
Remember Dick Tarrant and John Beilein? If you do you wouldn’t try to prop up Mooney and sporadic accomplishments.

Bad year or two under Mooney? Kudos for 3 NCAA’s in 20 years & 75 pct losing rate vs VCU. Come on now.

Serious question: if Soulis had stayed, would he be our best 5 right now?
I doubt it but mostly because I think Beagle is decent when he’s being aggressive. Walz brings so little offense for entire games that Soulis would be more of a threat.

We need our own Castro. That dude balled out.

Walz has regressed. He's a turnover waiting to happen.
So the Walz story to me is all about Mooney coaching. He drills virtually all young guys for one thing above all else - - make no mistakes in running his precious offense. Run it right and you are gold in his eyes - - - but run it right doesn't require you to actually make plays. In fact trying to make plays may be detrimental to your standing with coach because to make a play, you may have to get out of system. So Walz spent his early years learning to play "the Mooney Way' but not learning to make plays. Now he is in a position that we need him to make plays and he has had that whole thing bred right on out of him! And he is far from the first who is seemingly developing only to plateau and go backward when asked to do more. You can't develop players this way. Players has to learn to play and learn to make plays - - - ofter by not making them and understanding why it didn't work out instead of simply not trying to make them!

And the OOC is just another example of this way of coaching. No one learns to make plays against all that slop because we don't need anyone to and we all can run the system and do it right and win. But then we see real opposition and we cant run the system or make plays!

The problem is that it’s not just a bad year or two. He’s had four losing seasons in the last eight. This isn’t an anomaly, it’s pretty much in line with history.

Watched a few highlights of Soulis. Looks like he has beefed up a bit, and he has some moves/aggression. Getting to start and play around 20 minutes a game. Probably made a good move going to play for Hovde. Not huge numbers but not bad. Bet he takes a nice jump again next season.

We have disagreed on Soulis, and I am not sure he could be a factor for us in the A-10, but I am so done with Walz that I can now admit I would rather have Soulis here than Walz.

Just watched the parts of the post game press conference posted to the SpiderTV on demand section of Sports page.

Johnson was the player interview and he said the team did not have enough heart in this game. After hearing that I have to say that is what I saw in person at the RC. Something about the team chemistry is off. I don’t know if it is because the guys lost focus over the holidays or if it is something else. Hopefully the former because that is easily fixed by getting back into the routine and grind of the season.

The other thing is I hope the team is motivated when it plays in Foggy Bottom. I haven’t had such a negative reaction toward an opponent at the RC since Duquesne won at the RC a couple of years ago. I don’t appreciate the antics.

The constant subbing in and out is hurting more than helping.

1. No one can get into a rhythm, offensively or defensively.
2. We sub at the 18 minute mark. No one should need a break 2 minutes in. This immediately disrupts our starting 5.
3. Our defense is nonexistent, so no reason to sub based on defense. Keep our best offensive guys (see #4) on the floor.
4. Aiden, Johnston, Lopez, Daughtry, and Beagle need to start and play a lot of minutes.
5. I have seen enough of Tyne, Walz, and Tanner. We can bring them off the bench, but they do not need so many minutes.

This was an embarrassing performance. To not have any answers defensively for 40 minutes is beyond ridiculous. Some teams are better defensively than offensively and some teams, like ours this year, are better offensively than defensively. So, start our best offensive guys and leave them out there for awhile. Maybe we score enough early to put a little pressure on the other team, which could help our defense. Just stop with the constant subbing. Just stop.
