About Virginia's Gerrymandering

This article tracks the demographic underpinnings of the Gerrymandering going on in Virginia.

Virginia has suddenly taken center stage in the national redistricting wars as Old Dominion Democrats attempt to seize map-making powers back from a nonpartisan redistricting commission that voters approved in 2020. But while liberals croon that their gerrymandering crusade is about “protecting democracy,” the proposed maps highlight a disturbing story about rigging democracy through demographic change.

The new map underscores the new political reality in Virginia: NOVA dominates. The state’s shift from Republican stronghold to purple battleground to now becoming a safe haven for Democrats has been almost entirely driven by a population explosion in NOVA. As one commentator noted on X, Republicans controlled nearly half of the state legislative seats based in NOVA as recently as 2015. Now, they control zero.

But this political restructuring has less to do with internal migration and more to do with the mass importation of voters from abroad – part of an intentional strategy by Democrats to weaponize immigration to rig the game against Republicans. In many parts of NOVA, more than a quarter of the population is foreign-born – a trend that has coincided with growing Democrat dominance.

Don't believe redistricting between censuses is right regardless of the party initiating it. Only serves to further divide us when we need the opposite.

My family has lived in Virginia for over 300 years. To witness what our dear Commonwealth has become is almost unbearable. Would crawl across molten lava to vote against this gerrymandering abomination. Anyone interested in good governance should as well.

I don't disagree with you, but what I question is why should the states that did gerrymander with a partisan purpose be allowed to control Congress?

They often have.

With respect, seems a disingenuous argument. Massachusetts, Maryland, Illinois are three blatant examples of Blue states that have been partisanly gerrymandered for decades. Hey, both parties do it, but those three historically have taken it to a whole new level.

The campaign before us is interesting. For those opposed, polling must have indicated "unfair" was a key word to use. For those in favor, polling must have indicated "level playing field" were key words to use. See how it turns out.

Drawing lines that essentially deny 40-45% of Virginians a reasonable chance to elect a Congressional representation reflective of their views does not seem to advance the interests of the body politic. 10 to 1 favored seats hardly reflects the Commonwealth politically.

These are fair points. Redrawing of maps should be done in accordance with the census.
This comes back to the old adage that two wrongs do not make a right.

I would add California to your list.

Spanberger has also undertaken several other ultra left efforts, including changing our status as a right to work state, mandatory unionization of every level of state and local government, transforming state benefits to union benefits, changing the Virginia Constitution to support political gerrymandering, loss of parental control over children's gender decisions, and mandatory sanctuary policies for illegals
