2025 Richmond Spiders Football - Spider Gang Intro

thanks to SFspidur and anyone else who played a role in bringing back this message board in time for another season of Richmond football...

don't look now, but Russ Huesman and his staffs have built a program that battles for Championships and FCS Playoff bids every year...only two other times in the new millennium have the Spiders gone to the Playoffs three consecutive years... a Playoff bid this season will give Richmond four appearances in a row!

it will be a year of significant change and challenges...replacing at least 10 starters to graduation and the Portal...new co-ordinators and assistant coaches becoming comfortable and effective in their roles...and new opponents in the Patriot League who may be tougher than many expected... Coach Huesman and his staff will be tested!

there's a lot of solid talent returning on both sides of the ball, but there are key holes that will have to be filled...it's going to be interesting to see the younger, less experienced players see if they can take advantage of the opportunities and fill the gaps...

its a long way till Championship November and Playoffs December, but the longest month of the year is August...waiting through the dog days for August 31 and real Spiders' football to arrive...the Spider Gang will do its best to help fans get there!

enjoy the Intro...

stay cool and hydrated!

Go Spiders!

Lots of change for Spider football for sure, but looking forward to seeing the results in the new league and rather excited about next year when W&M and Villanova are back with UR in the same conference again.

Hard to believe it could be 4 in a row for playoff football. I’m only a casual fan and that fact really snuck up on me.

Glad the message board made it back in time to fill in the void before the season gets rolling. Go Spiders!

regarding the three FCS Playoffs in a row, it does kind of fly under the radar, but Coach Huesman has figured out how to win at Richmond...

he got off to a very difficult start in 2017 by failing to take advantage of what Coach Rocco had built in the years before (Rocco's squads also made the Playoffs three consecutive years 2014-2016 against a tougher CAA)...

the program continued to struggle until finishing out the 2021 season with 4 consecutive wins to finish 6-5...since then Huesman's Spiders are 9-4, 9-4, 10-3...28-11 for the three Playoff seasons...

I expect this season will be one of his biggest challenges since he turned the corner in 2021...

Go Spiders!

For winning purposes, we clearly benefited from the watering down of the CAA over the past few years, as well as some easy scheduling draws on top of that the past two seasons. Avoiding Albany, 'Nova, and Delaware in 2023 and URI, 'Nova, and UNH (and even Stony Brook) last season certainly made our path easier. And we didn't always blow out the weaker teams we did face, so there is some uneasiness despite the great records and playoff appearances.

Unbalanced schedules are one thing I hate about conference expansion for all sports.

no question JMU’s exit paved the way for Championships and the unbalanced schedule of the CAA helped too, but I have to give Huesman credit that with the exception of the 2022 Championship game versus the Indians, the Spiders won the big games they had to win.

As for this season, I do have some “uneasiness” also. It will be a good test of where the program is for all the reasons noted.

Looking forward to finding out where we are.

The perfect season in the CAA and the euphoria came crashing down, against a well-coached team in Lehigh. Lehigh exposed our weaknesses.

UR one of top 10 all-time FCS programs. SF may be able to find the link. Don't count us out so easily.

The analysis of Wickersham by RolSpides is good. I have a few questions, as evident from the video of Wickersham against Wofford last season.
Is Kyle injury prone, because his role is one of a run first QB. It seems like the first inclination is for Kyle to lower his shoulder and try to run over defenders. In passing plays, does Kyle hold the ball too long, making it likely he will either run under duress or be sacked?
