2025 Richmond Spiders Football - Prologue - Lehigh

Mojo-Spider

Bench player

really looking forward to seeing how the much younger and less experienced Spiders perform against the Patriot League's best...the result Saturday should be a good measure of how far the rebuilt squad has come in fall camp, and perhaps how far we have to go in the battle for a Championship in the PL...

with the exception of our placekicking game, Coach Huesman has generally been very positive about his team...there is lots of youth and less experience than we'd like, but the exodus of starters has created opportunities for talented and promising younger players who fans can hope will rise to the occasion...

Lehigh will test and pressure us on both sides of the ball...there's no reason to believe they'll do much differently than they did in last November's win...two things beat us then...the failure to finish with TDs in the red zone and long chunk play TDs...

with our lack of a placekicking game we may have little choice than to try and finish drives with TDs and two point conversions...in November the Spiders rolled up 345 yards of offense against this defense but still came up short...our new backfield and receiver's will have to step up against the PL's best defense...

our front seven and young, but promising secondary, will have to control another member of the Yoder family and his backfield partner Green, and prevent the "run first" Lehigh offense from another back breaking 65 yard TD from Johnson to Jamiel!...everyone returns at the Lehigh skilled positions...

like Coach Huesman said yesterday the winner of this game will likely be the team that executes the best...that's my hope, that these rebuilt Spiders will execute well enough to give the PL's best a good battle...win, or lose, if the Richmond team plays well we should be even better by the time the bulk of our Patriot League schedule begins in October...there will be a lot of football left to play for Richmond and Lehigh!

enjoy the Prologue and let's see where we are!

Go Spiders!

Only 3 members of your panel picked the Spiders. Since Ms. Diplomat won last year, I accept her pick- that the Spiders win.

Their media department edits it out as ours should do. But the chimpanzee that edits our media sees nothing wrong with spitting, scratching, grooming, etc.
Wait, there is an expectation to try to make the coach look as good as possible? First, you want edited communications and now you want edited video? What kind of budget do you think the athletic department has? /s

This move should help us v Lehigh.Cahill will make the Boola Boola a top notch FCS destination.

Yale gave host #2 Montana State a very tight 2nd round playoff game after beating host YSU in the 1st round.

Maybe Yoder and Green will transfer to New Haven.

Yale QB Dante Reno(Tony’s son and transfer from Gamecocks) will keep starting nod.

I want a league where Richmond football has to rise and meet the level of other top teams rather than lowering the quality of the league to be competitive. A great Lehigh, Villanova, William and Mary, is good for the league which is good for Richmond.

Yales hires Lehigh’s head football coach. Don’t know if this says more about Yale and its desire to be a top dog in FCS but not exactly a ringing endorsement of the Patriot League to have a team that was in the top 10 in FCS leave for Yale. Supposedly his salary will double there.

Would have expected him to go FBS

Maybe some good old fashioned loyalty. He and Tony Reno were best of buddies. He and his family may have actually enjoyed themselves during their 10 years at Yale.Bethlehem is a very quaint pastural, rural school setting.Yale
Is Top 5 nationally ranked with a $45 billion endowment and unmatched facilities along with a “rich” football tradition.

A Springfield College graduate,Cahill is 48 yo with a son and daughter who will now eventually attend Yale. There are excellent secondary schools in New Haven(Hopkins,Choate) as well.

Huesman likely outearns Cahill 2x.

There's a very good chance Dan Hunt is elevated to head coach. If so, I genuinely believe Lehigh won't miss a beat. Hunt's fingerprints have been all over the program since day 1 of the Cahill Era. I've been on the record stating that Cahill owes a tremendous amount of his success to Hunt and the DC who is also a former head coach; but especially Dan.

If for some reason it's not Hunt then Lehigh needs to go all in for Kutztown's Jim Clements.

Dating back to the late 1960s the only Lehigh head coach who did not enjoy significant success was Tom Gilmore. And his hiring came on the heels of Coen's tragic circumstances which caused some key decision makers to act on emotion (Gilmore and Coen were friends, Tom was Lehigh's DC in the early 2000s) rather than reason.
