We're officially doomed

Good list VT. I'm going to watch Yale play Wilmington in the NIT tonight and was thinking about them. They played at Howard OOC late in the season. Did we call Yale? Again just one example but after JMU put us on blast I really think the problem is more effort from our coaches rather than the excuses they offer.
Not sure Coach likes to play teams he played against while in school either ...

BB admitted that this years schedule wasn't designed to help the team make the NCAA Tournament. So it was designed for one purpose: to get CM to 20 wins which for some reason UR still values. How do you have a coach in place for 21 years in the A10 and not even try to put yourself in position for a bid? Posters here with about 2 exceptions care way more about winning and NCAA appearances than those in control at UR do. Can't make this kind of stuff up. Hopefully we will continue to bring this to light at least in the local media when given the chance. Fitz is much better about honestly covering the program than Matt Josephs is. MJ admitted on his show that he is friends with Mooney and isnt comfortable seriously covering UR because of this connection and because the station is the flagship for UR athletics. Very unprofessional to not cover each team fairly regardless of personal feelings/friendships in my opinion.

Appears that Mooney is very strategic with friendships.

To my brethren on this forum - the regurgitated stories and endless excuses are beyond getting old. No end in sight. We deserve better. Everything for one coach, and no one else matters. It’s tiring.
It is crazy that its ground hog day year after year with Mooney. Same excuses, same schemes, same shortcomings, same blaaahhh. Over and over.

Probably good I can't open the article. I would be throwing things if so. Help from the A-10 office? Like we needed Lunardi's help??

You want some help? Here's some help. Look at the NET. Find quality mid majors in the top 100 and top 150 and freaking schedule them. They might not have the same NETs next year, but maybe they will....and they won't be 300+!!!!!! You can still schedule 3 or 4 250+ games like every team plays. Here are some teams, and there are plenty more in the top 100 that I could mention.

Tulsa 52 NET.....Mooney's Uncle went there.
Akron 54......His high school friend thought about going there.
Yale 68....His friend's Mom went there.
UNI 72.....1st grade teacher went there.
High Point 75....didn't want to hear jokes about us being at our low point when playing them.
Wichita 78....His wife knows someone there.
Hofstra 88....His son has a poster of them on his wall.
Bradley 113 ( they were begging for games last year). He hopes to be friends with their coach someday.
UAB 118.....He met their film guy in an airport.
Click to expand my previous post in the box above for more excuses why we can't play Tulsa and these other teams.

A big reason moon and company are so despised now, is the fact that he tries to sell himself as a victim, poor ol lil ol coach mooney. No one will play us. Wahhh. But other mid majors are getting games, and JMU was really really good when they had the Vandy coach. And lil ol LIAR wouldn't return their calls. And we all know and see its just an attempt to pile up meaningless wins. In addition to ruling us out of the NCAA before the first game, it did not prepare us for A10 play. I made this point when the schedule came out. How are u going to know your best players and lineups playing this crap. And we didn't. We completely switched strategies when the competition level upped in conference play. Just pathetic from Mooney.

So true about the victim nonsense. The excuses have caused me to do a complete 180 on Mooney. And the schedules are so unacceptable. 2 years of losing and terrible coaching is one thing. Had that been our only issues, and we still had good schedules and a coach who didn't make excuses and acted like the losing bothered him, I would still want Mooney gone, but I would respect him a lot more.

But, it hasn't been just the losing and the coaching. It has been all of the above that has made me lose so much respect for Mooney the past 2 years. My frustration level with our program has never been higher.

So I’m glad you’ve come around but the excuse making goes back a decade. The questionable coaching decisions as well, and poor recruiting even longer. The weakness scheduling is more recent.

There’s a reason why a large contingent of fans have been crying foul for a long time now.

I hear u, but the schedule excuse making wasn't there until the last 2 years because we had good schedules with multiple majors on them through 2024.

The NIL wasn't an excuse in past years because we didn't have NIL.

I agree there have been questionable coaching decision that go way back. I mentioned some while I was still showing support.

Poor recruiting has gone back to right after we got Tyler. We could have used another key player at times before that, but I thought we always recruited well enough before Tyler to put pretty good talent on the floor. Jacob, Grant, Nate, Nick, and Buck were some pretty impressive recruits in the late 2010s. And plenty of talent before those guys as well. But, clearly a big drop off since we got Tyler. AA is by far our best recruit since Tyler.

I know I was in the minority for quite awhile, and, sure, there was a reason a large amount of fans disagreed with my ongoing support, and gave me a lot of crap for it, but I still will say I enjoyed the 2020, 2022, and 2024 seasons.

So, because I was happy with those years, that is why I focus on the last 2 when I say it was the schedule and the losing, and yes, the poor recruiting, that has made me agree it is time for a change, and a combination of all the factors I mentioned earlier that had made me lose respect for Mooney.

I've been crying foul and we haven't renewed our season tickets we had for a long time about 7 years ago. I'm sure they know about the season ticket reduction but I guess as long as the Lakewood Manor bus keeps pulling up with attendees they're happy.

I seem to recall 05 having some data from our Sweet Sixteen run that really didn't show that much of an increase in applications.

I think it matters greatly what the type of institution is. High Point is a less well known school with a high acceptance rate. And so they can benefit quite a bit from getting their name out there, and especially when paired with the unique experience offered to students there, it can generate a lot of interest and a larger applicant pool. And with many schools struggling to hit enrollment targets, it's a boon for them.

UR already has a low acceptance rate and is well-known within its target market, so there may not be as much to gain from an NCAA run. And we're not struggling to hit enrollment goals. (The value of NCAA success was probably a different story back in the '80s when UR was still growing its academic reputation and selectivity.)

Not saying we shouldn't be pursuing basketball excellence, but I do think the impact of NCAA success can vary significantly from institution to institution.

I bet it improves giving, if nothing else.
This is the biggest thing that it does for a small school like UR. The revenue sports are mostly for the alumni and no one wants to back a losing team.

I agree with @SFspidur that an increase is applications isn’t going to come from Men’s basketball success. It seems fairly obvious that UR is not at the top of the list for any non-athletes that are looking for sporting event options. I guess we will see if there is a huge surge in student interest with the apparent drastic increase in funding. My gut says no.
