We're officially doomed

The Mooneyites have been hiding all season, and most of last season too on the old board. There really isn't anything pointing to the future being bright these days. Not last year, not this year, not next year.
Who are u u talking about? I keep hearing about these "Mooneyites", but I think it was usually just a few of us on here, even when we won, (sman, 17, me?) who supported him in the past. And we are still here.

agreed - I have gone back and forth but in general have been more a supporter than not but have just basically breaking point once again similar to after the horrendous @ VCU loss when I was in Paris in Feb '22 and literally woke up at 1am Paris time to watch a horrendous game of bball .. (and then the world turned again to amazement in 3 weeks)

Bringing CM back is so embarrassing to anyone associated with UR.
I messaged a Duquesne alum who used to work for me to see if he’d seen the debacle. His response was he was worried it was too fresh to bring up which made me laugh.

He then went on to say I should be relieved that this should finally be the nail in the coffin. I then informed him of Hardt’s first night tweet.

Even the outsiders see the absurdity.

Matt Josephs right now on ESPN Richmond calling a spade a spade, as well... This is a refreshing day.
Nice to hear that there are media in Richmond that isn’t just JOC who cares enough to talk about UR and call it as they see them. Our admin can only live in their bubble for so long. Between the radio talk show hosts and JOC’s tweet getting 70K views, these lack of results are being noticed by people.

They used to put the entire show online but seems like they don't archive them like that anymore. But to summarize, he basically said Mooney would have been fired most places by now, said the way the Hardt announcement came out was terrible and that he owes it to fans to explain what the plan is, said there needs to be accountability, said this year's schedule was garbage and clearly designed to stockpile wins and that next year's has to be better. He also said that the NIL funding be to increase but that most supporters won't want to give money while Mooney is the coach.

Having non-UR sports hosts share these thoughts is the best thing that can happen to us. I don’t know if anyone in our administration reads these boards and if they do, probably don’t care what we have to say. Think that it’s a few disgruntled Richmond fans that’ll complain no matter what. However, when it gets to the point to where even people unaffiliated with the university in anyway start saying the same thing, then it can’t be ignored.

I think you're right, but that's so backwards if you think about it.

It looks like they haven't been archived in about 2 years, since the last show I could find was in 2024.

Thanks for the summary. Sounds like Matt has a list very similar to my own. As far as NIL and revenue share go, it would be very interesting to know where any additional funding comes from. Of course, there is not going to be any sort of public disclosure of that information. If it is from University funds, one really has to question who controls the purse strings and why a change was made for next year. Can’t be because of this year’s results.

I’m curious, why do you think that? I would think this years results are why university funds would increase for next year. Unless PQ donates more, I don’t see how they can convince more donors to give more. I think even our leadership recognizes that these results are very poor. Rather than addressing the heart of the issue by buying out the rest of Mooney’s contract, they decided to give him more in NIL. At least they’re trying to do something

I want to know what criteria that prevented more funds from being contributed suddenly changed to allow additional funds to be added. I certainly don’t know where the funds to pay players is currently coming from, but my feeling is that the vast majority of the funding is from private donations. Like you said, I would further think that the private funds have reached a ceiling which means the additional funding would have to come from the University. So what changed for the University to decide that it should invest $2-$3 million in basketball player salaries? It simply seems to be the polar opposite of what I would expect the University to do based on recent history. I simply don’t see any reason for the University to “bail out” the Men’s basketball program. If they do choose to provide a cash infusion, I sure hope the administration provides some rationale.

I have heard all the comments about the large endowment etc and understand the emotional responses, but I have never heard, nor can I find anything from the University BOV that says Men’s Basketball has any sort of priority. If there is a sudden change, I want to hear the “why”.

it's probably all coming from the school.
they want a successful basketball program. it's important. they tried to do it on the cheap this year. it failed.
increasing NIL doesn't guarantee anythying, but paying 40% of what the top teams in the league pay is a losing proposition.

Hallock, Hardt, and even Mooney in this most recent interview expressed the importance and priority basketball has with the university and its visibility it has and value it brings with prospective students, alums, and the community. They’re not blind to everything. I’m sure they get a bunch of emails, phone calls, and meetings with disgruntled fans. They hear comments online and on sports radio shows.

My guess is this is how it went down. When the NIL/house settlement fund first became a thing, leadership sat down and said “how much needs to be given for us to be competitive in the A10” not at the top of the A10 or become a top 25 program in the country, but competitive in the A10 which probably means finishing top 6 or 7, making A10 semi finals.

ADs talk to each other and they all have meetings with Bernadette and I think the expectation was to spend around $2 million to be in the middle. Programs like VCU and Dayton that have higher expectations and goals for their program will give more, but the average A10 team will be $2 million. So Hardt probably went to Queally and other top donors and said to be “competitive” we need to raise $2 million. I’m sure most if not all of that was donor driven and primarily by PQ.

After this season, everyone realized that we aren’t even competitive with that much money, and realized the embarrassment of keeping a coach with these results. Rather than buying out the contract they would rather increase the NIL so that Mooney can do well enough where we’re not embarrassed. I doubt many donors not named PQ were willing to give more and even PQ probably has his limits, so they went to the BoT. The BoT recognizes the importance of basketball for our university and agreed to subsidize the rest to reach what I think will be $4-5 million.
