Transfer Portal

Something is just not right with our Football Program ! All of these players that are leaving are just not the finished talent that will attract
FBS/BCS programs. If they are we should have dominated our season?🏈🕸️🕷️

I am a long time lurker and first time poster to the board. I grew up watching the Frank Jones U of R football show. I am class of 82 at UR so I got to see both Jeff Nixon and Barry Redden play. To see a local talent like Peyton Seelmann head into the portal after year 2…it is concerning. I would like to hear the administration, athletic department and coaching staffs “Vision” for Spider football. We did no big advertisement or hype for a “NEW” era of Spider football in the Patriot League. It seems like we still have our group of freshman developmental players while teams like Bucknell are playing true freshman flabbergasting Bob Black on the radio call because he could not find them on their two deep roster. It seems like more questions than answers with the sport that has won an FCS Championship.

If your coach sounds like Eeyore everytime he talks publicly, runs an antiquated offense and states that he doesn’t care if players transfer - is that a place that kids want to stay?

The level of excitement around the program may be the lowest that I can remember in 30 years that I’ve been paying attention.
add 20+ years to yours. At least “Show Tait the Gate” had passion.

This is the correct take. There will also be a some attrition rate because players will want the NIL, and the chance to play a higher level, but I think it is higher now because of the coaching. Has there been a player who has publicly supported Huesman? On the basketball things, say what you want about Mooney, his players both current and former seem pretty loyal and publicly supportive of him. He has not had any player transfer up that I can recall except a couple of grad transfers.

If we ever want to have relevance in FCS football ever again, what needs to happen is:
1) We hire up-and-coming coaches who can achieve success quickly (3-4 year span) before moving on. Hope to find the next Curt Cignetti who uses Richmond as a stepping stone to FBS.
2) In term of our recruiting, lean into the fact that a player can get developed here before transferring to play at a higher level (like a Kobie Turner, Aamir Hall, Malik Mustapha, Tyler Funderburk). Hope we can get 2 good years from them at UR.
3) Be good at recruiting transfers, especially transfers who are talented at lower FCS levels and playing at Richmond would be a step up.
