Transfer Portal

Had a terrific game v the Tribe.Likely would have been a permanent fixture next season on D with 3 years remaining. He’ll bring interest from potential suitors.
Haskett was very good tackler and probably best corner at end of season. So far 5 entering of which all are starters
and very good players. May be some of the coaches need to enter the portal.

Seelmann has his agent on both his Twitter & Insta bio, plus Trey Gray lists his positions and 1 year of eligibility. Hard to imagine those two don't enter in the coming days.

I have the same concerns. Are they leaving for greener pastures or is it discontent with our coaches. Doesn’t seem a degree from Richmond is keeping the best talent here?🏈🕷️🕸️

A degree doesn't mean anything to people who believe they can play in the NFL and that you can't get there from UR (even though that has been proven wrong time and again).

This is all very odd to me and like KE and peanuts it raises some concerns. Say what you will about our other primary sports, they don't seem to lose nearly as many in the various portals on a porportional basis. And none of them (except perhaps Maggie) are going to play professionally so clearly at least some athletes value the Richmond degree/experience. Why is football different?

Field hockey, Tennis, and the other Olympic sports don’t have NIL money or at least any significant money. So even if the guys transferring won’t end up in NFL, they’ll have an opportunity to make some decent NIL money in football, which is the king of college sports. Even G5 schools will have some good money to throw around, which is way more than what is offered at Richmond… which is effectively zero. Other thoughts could be more exposure and culture around football. I’m sure many of those players want to play under bright lights on ESPN and have many fans attending the games. Not as prevalent ant Richmond. Also, like others have mentioned there’s always the dream of going pro in football. Tennis, field hockey, cross country don’t have as much of a professionally established system. Baseball and lacrosse (albeit lacrosse is growing) do, as well as basketball.

Lastly, I’m sure coaching has something to do with it. Not just the X’s and O’s and the boring/inefficient offensive scheme we have and fact that we don’t make deep runs in the playoffs like we used to, but also the way Huesman talks about transferring to the media or saying he’s not a players coach to the media. All these factors will likely lead to higher attrition rates in football than all other sports.

The successful transfer placement to FBS/BCS of last years players was an omen of things to come. That coupled with Huesman’s indifference as to whether a player transfers out or not.Expect middle of the pack results in the Patriot league for 2026,best case.
With bball and wbball getting NIL and all the attention and FBall not, most of these Fbplayers got to be asking themselves ‘WTF’.

No offense, but how can anyone be surprised by this? It's not even a Richmond thing, it's just college athletics these days. We need to be operating from a place of expectation as it relates to losing good players every year, not shock and surprise when it happens. It's happening, it's going to continue happening every year from now on. So the question is, do we have the proper coaches in place who can handle it effectively or not?

One of our DBs that I think went to App State and then got drafted by Tampa Bay. But I also feel there is
something with coaching staff that is not helping our retention of good players. Bball loses bench players
and football loses talented starters.

If we can keep recruiting the caliber of athletes that we have been in the last few years, I can except and continue to follow and support UR Football. We can not Redshirt them and coach them up for 2 years and reload as they move on. But if we start to recruit lower level talent that can’t move up, then we will be a mid conference team with no playoff hopes and eventually our program will die! 🏈🕷️🕸️

Seems like a transition thing to me. Still have a good number of players that weren’t recruited to play in the Patriot league. If the attrition continues beyond this year, then I think there is a coaching problem. Players who come to UR can’t be expecting NIL as that isn’t being offered. The expectation from the UR administration side has to be that the team is comprised mostly of 4 year players who want to get a Richmond degree. Nearly all UR players will be doing something other than playing football upon graduation. In fact, from Huesmann’s comments it sounded like there were a number of seniors with eligibility who said to him that they were ready to go into the “real world” and he totally didn’t understand why. So the transfers are disappointing, but shouldn’t be continuous.
