Sam "Deuce" Simmons Jr. - 2026 Signee

"I decided to choose Richmond because of the relationships I have built with the Coach Mooney and the coaching staff," Simmons told 247Sports. "Building those relationships played a big part and them making me feel like I am their guy the first time they started recruiting me just meant the world to me."
"I would say they love how I play defensively and how well I get my teammates involved and just an overall leader. I think they believe that I can lead the team and just be an overall pest on defense and run the show for their offense. I think they would help me grow as a shooter and become a consistent shooter."
"Talking with Jacob definitely helped with my decision based on how things were when he was there and what all he went through and him just giving me some advice.," said Simmons. "Also hearing from him that Coach Mooney is a great coach definitely makes my decision easier I would say."
"I definitely feel relief that this is done and I don't have to worry about anything else but Richmond! What I am most looking forward to when I get there is to just grind every day and get better."

Agree. Hopefully he is the real deal. But if so Mooney will play him and AA together a bunch of minutes. So even if he is a Gilly level pest, it further impacts having a small guard switched on a big.

good! he looks like a high intensity pest defensively. maybe we finally scratch the switch. go back to hedge and recover. if their guard is a shooter, blitz and trap. if not, hedge and go under the screen. stop using one solution for every player.

Simmons named Kansas Gatorade POY. Classic "Richmond University" mention in the press release.

The 5-foot-11, 165-pound senior guard led the Eagles to a 18-4-1 record and the Class 6A state championship this past season. Simmons averaged 14.4 points, 5 assists and 2.7 steals, including 13 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds in a 67-50 win over Shawnee Mission South in the state title game. Ranked as the state’s No.1 recruit in his class by 247Sports, he concluded his prep career as the program leader in single-season assists (126) and steals (80) as well as career steals.

Hard to find him in national rankings, though a Yahoo article seems to rank him at #280 nationally.

#1. Sam Simmons Jr. (PG)
- National rank: #280 (3 stars)
- Position rank: #42
- College: Richmond
- High school: Olathe North (Olathe, KS)

Does that Gatorade award mean Gatorade considers him the best player in Kansas this year? I would think that would mean he is much better than #280 nationally

Yes.

24/7 also ranks him the best player in Kansas...out of three that they have tracked. Both of the others are headed to Kansas City, and one of them is his high school teammate. They're ranked 324 and 340 nationally.

Kansas is not a particularly populous state. Still a nice honor.
Just my humble opinion, Deuce is a stud who was offered by Tennessee. He cut off his recruitment after Richmond offered.

Typically anyone 5'9 or 5'10 gets inflated to 6' (what was Jordan King listed?) So guessing the 5'9 is pretty accurate. Guy sounds like he can be an impact player, but going to be quite undersized again if he plays with AA.
