Roussell Interview

Simon isn't the same type of player as Addie, but she is a quality replacement. We may have to play a little bit differently offensively, but she will be solid enough. But I too am worried about replacing Hill. And Jimenez. And Alston. Our perimeter defense really all left!

Hill was such a perfect fit for us as that 5th starter. Tough, gritty, high basketball IQ and she did just enough of everything to make both offense and defense run smoothly. Not a great defender, but tough and smart and could hold her own. Not a great shooter, but good enough that you couldn't leave her alone. Not a great ballhandler, but good enough that you could count on her for pressure relief etc. Jiminez was extremely underrated in my mind. Probably because she wasn't here long and she bounced in and out due to some injuries. But she really added a dimension. She was an really excellent perimeter defender at the wing spots which we did not have absent her. She could step up and cover really good perimeter players. We didn't always need that, but against the better teams we did. Its no accident that she played more NCAA minutes than Sweeney or Hill. We needed that lateral quickness dynamic she provided! And she could do just enough offensively, that the offense could still run normally with her out there. And Alston played extensive minutes late in the season for much the same reason as Jimenez. She could defend quicker more athletic lead guards in a way Ally couldn't.

When we look at this year, I worry about our defense. Budnik was an A-10 Defensive Player of the Year; Jimenez was an excellent defender; Hill was the 2nd best defender amongst the starters and Alston was a defensive complement to Ally. And the pieces fit together so well because we were very long across the board defensively (save for Ally). Collective length helped hide some of our individual defensive shortcomings. Simon is a good defender for sure. And I think Newell can maybe do a lot of what Alston did for us last year. But I don't know where the perimeter defense that Hill and Jimenez gave us is going to come from. And not sure we will have the same collective length on the wings either. Hard to count on a freshman for defense - - that's a big step up for newbies who are usually noted for their offense in high school and will likely need lots of adjustment time to major college defense. Take just as an example Rayne Wright as she seems the most likely freshman to play meaningful minutes early. I don't know a ton about her, but I do know that the difference between who is was covering in high school last year and the college juniors and seniors on the better teams we play that she might be asked to cover this year is HUGE. HUGE. Its almost unfair to ask a freshman to be a step up defensive player! You usually are just hoping with freshman (especially perimeter ones) that they don't kill you on defense!

I was VERY surprised we didn't get an established defense first perimeter defender in the portal (i.e. someone just like Jimenez). Very surprised. WE have roles and minutes available on the wings that we are going to need someone to step up and fill if we are going to be even what we were last year much less better! And I haven't heard much in any of the little dribs and drabs we are getting from practice to make me any less worried! My big hope is that Roussel is obviously very good and knows his team and I guess he wasn't worried about it enough to have to get some help!
Skylah Travis may be the missing defensive length with length, height and P5 experience. Manthy has height but may be more on the block and since she was injured last year don’t know her potential. My guess is we are going to play quicker offensively and try to speed up the game which will hide some defensive liabilities

Nice post Philly. Well thought out. You touched a little bit what I was going to say in the middle. I see Simon replacing Hill’s role more than Budnik’s. We don’t have a direct replacement for Budnik, but my guess is Dewey will start at that position. We also have 6’3” Travis coming as a transfer but I think she will give more meaningful minutes coming from the bench to give Doogan or Dewey some rest.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Roussell will have some freshmen and/or sophomore step up and emerge as an impactful contributor as the season goes on. It’s just what he does. I think Newell or Persishetti will do well as back up PG and Wright or Richards playing the wing. So that’s at least a 10 player rotation I can see happening.

Predicted starters:
Sweeney
Simon
Ullstrom
Doogan
Dewey

Bench:
Newell
Persischetti
Wright
Richards
Travis

So I guess I don't see Simon as a perimeter player at all based on what I saw last year and her rep. She is much more a 4 to me than anything else. She rebounds a ton and blocks shots but I don't see her as a wing with us - - on either end of the floor. She was Top 10 in A-10 in both rebounds and blocks, but she doesn't shoot the three much and she had twice as many turnovers as assists. So she'd also be a tough fit on the perimeter for us offensively too! She is a 4/5 I think for us and a Budnik replacement but with a different game. And I think Dewey will play a good amount backing up our two bigs where she can do both. But I'd really worry about our perimeter defense with Simon and Dewey both starting along side the holdover three! Its possible, we might have to play more zone this year and try to do with a really long group; but I just don't think Coach really cares for zone at all.

That said, I don't see anyone as the likely missing Wing starter, but we obviously will have to play someone there. My hope remains that Coach knows his team and didn't fill this hole because he has confidence in someone to do it. That points to Richards to me - - but that's speculation not based on anything!

Travis is a complete mystery to me. She has been around for a 4 years of college ball and has played very little really. Didn't play at all at ODU, played 12 minutes total in 2 years at Mizzou (so its a bit of a stretch to say she has P5 experience) and played about 15 minutes a game off the bench for half a season last year at Louisiana. She could be anything I guess but really hard to count on. And her stats and high school rep point to her being strictly a big and not a perimeter player. Posted some big rebounding numbers and solid blocks in the limited minutes, but she is 0-1 over 4 years from three and her assist/turnover numbers tell me she is strictly a big. But a mystery for sure. But a long shot at best in my mind to be an answer on perimeter defense! She may battle Dewey for minutes as a backup big! And since you mentioned her - - Manthy is also a total mystery!

Manthy is a legit 6'3" . She is the tallest player on the team. Travis looked more like 6'1" to me in the practice I saw.

Manthy has good potential and could be very, very, good by time all is said and done, but she struggles a bit with lateral quickness right now.

Travis is a true 5. I see her scrapping underneath but she will compete with Dewey and Simon for minutes imo. Simon is not as quick as Katie Hill but she is stronger physically.

Payton RIchard is the wild card. If she takes a big step forward this year we may be the best Spiders Lady team ever. If she is just ok, we will still be very, very good.

Don't sleep on Persichetti and Wright as true freshman. They look like they are ready now.

Yeah - - Manthy is also a bit of a mystery woman still. She and Swider (before she left) seemed very duplicative - - legit 6'3; some skills, but both strength and lateral quickness a question mark. Hopefully she is a contributor eventually, but I don't see that being this year,

I agree that if Richards can take a 1st to 2nd year leap like Ally did, we are really in business. If she isn't ready to be a big contributor, I think our focus changes a little because we are going to have to learn to play a bit differently and it may take awhile to get it all figured out and get everyone on the same page! But should still be dangerous by year-end - - just may be a slower start while we integrate new people and a new style!

How did Richards look in the practices you saw UR2?

She was solid but not spectacular. But in fairness was playing against Rachel and Maggie. Harder to stand out when playing against those 2.
