Postmortem Offense

I disagree. Huesman sets the tone and makes the decisions on the broad general online of the offense. Our "offensive" lack of production is Huesman's fault.

i will change the language of the post to make the issue clear.
As the CEO of the program absolutely. He’s responsible and if he’s not an offensive guy then he needs to hire the best OC available and bring in the best QB. We are actually in agreement.

Guys and gals,

This is no surprise. When Cam hit the road,Huseman should have found an experienced, mobile QB in the portal.#16 and #18 were never gonna be the answer, even with “stepping down to the Patriot league”.We knew that from last year’s debacle of a start.Lets not kid ourselves.
Coleman could see the field.Neither of these QBs see the field nor throw accurately with authority. They are pocket passers without a view.We got what we got. This predicament severely hurts our ability to effectively have a balanced offense. It puts a ton of pressure on our
run offense when you are unable to throw the ball.
We should give the young guys a shot at QB.
What is your assessment of Snelsire after yesterday's game?

Bucknell’s defense has been and remains very porous.#18 should have had a good day as did the other offensive chess pieces-WRs,RBs.

VMI had a great offensive day v Bucknell and put up 28.That says a lot about the porous nature of their defense.Marist,a Pioneer member, put up 23 against Bucknell.

#18 threw 3 picks yesterday against a weak defense. The most critical pick came from the Red Zone (the Bucknell 20) on a 1st down with 1:40 remaining. It was destined to be the winning drive.Dawson was open behind the DB and #18 could have run.He had an open lane. That disastrous mistake was due to a combination of QB error and dumb play calling.

To be honest, the season is shot.Colgate and Lafayette have much better defenses than Bucknell.Play the young guys and get ready for next season. They need game experience given the speed of the game.

You did predict that we might go .500 for the season.

Absolutely agree although if 18 hits Dawson with 1:40 left I had no confidence that our defense would hold Bucknell. Hindsight is 20/20 but wish we would have used Foster-Powell down there on that last drive in the red-zone. Move the ball, burn clock, and don't leave the Bison any time.

This is a great summation of the game. We overhauled our offense in one week.

Teams add plays and make adjustments every week but this was effectively an overhaul. We got Snelsire out of the pocket, utilized the entire field, and most importantly weren’t overly run centric.

1st down | 59% pass, 41% run
2nd down | 38% pass, 62% run

Great balance on 1st & 2nd down, resulting in a near 50/50 split for the game. The Spiders weren’t predictable and it made us much tougher to defend, a huge factor in our sustained drives. We averaged over 9 yards/play on 1st down, 6 yards/play on 2nd down, which in turned yielded a very efficient day on 3rd down (75% conversions).

Snelsire far exceeded expectations, but he lacks experience and confidence. He handled the game well. The writer was very pleased with his performance.

Ashten Snelsire – A wild day for Snelsire. He made some fantastic throws, avoided a couple sacks with his legs, and continually marched the offense down the field. In nine drives, six of them spanned 60+ yards. The biggest hurdle for our offense was stringing together plays/possessions and we were able to do that over the weekend....

Bucknell
Bucknell was giving up 450+ yards against FCS teams so the Spiders nearly putting up 500 isn’t crazy. How we did it was refreshing – a complete 180 from the early season UR offense, with more than half of our throws being 16+ yards downfield. Eight of our nine drives featured a pass throw in the deepest bucket, as we feasted on Bucknell’s weak coverage and Snelsire’s early accuracy.

This sums it up. We should stick with Snelsire.

I said before the game that I wanted us to let Snelsire play through the mistakes and we did just that. Interceptions are never easy to swallow however I’m glad the offense stayed aggressive throughout rather than taking the ball out of his hands. For a guy who only had 43 career pass attempts entering the game, Snelsire absolutely answered the call.

Snelsire answered the call and ran a completely new scheme. We should stick with him for the rest of the season. We can close out the season strong.

Well done Spiders.

Snelsire looked good and our offense - for the most part - looked much more efficient under a passing thread QB first. Unfortunately, his inexperience showed at critical parts of the game. It says on the website that he is a senior so I am not sure if he has eligibility next year. It says he redshirted in 2022 but nothing about 2024 and whether he played or not.

If this is his last year, give the starting spot to a younger QB(s) to get them the experience now. Season is over anyway.

The Patriot League, because of its rules against redshirting, require teams to report the actual year of academic standing and not the redshirt year. If he redshirted in 2022, one may conclude this is his 3rd year of eligibility, so he has one more after this one- maybe.

This assumes the Patriot League will allow it.

Snelsire has one more shot to stake his claim for the full-time job, then we'll see what happens.

As refreshing as it was to see us be more aggressive through the air against Bucknell, Snelshire's 3 int's were all very poor decisions that are going to happen with an inexperienced QB. Snelshire is listed as a Senior this year. Assuming that he has no eligibility left I'd start seeing what we had with the younger QB's on the roster. Might as well get those mistakes out of the way this year and come into next season with a somewhat experienced guy (and if they all look rough then you hit the portal at that position). My worry is that the Huesman(s) prefer a run first QB and Wickersham constantly being evaluated as the best option entering the past few seasons doesn't give me a great feeling about future Qb evaluation/development.

Agree. Good post.

I doubt even if we run the table that we get playoff game. Maybe now is the time to play for the future.

I wonder if RH has given any thought to moving Wick to another position such as a fullback type or tight end. He might be effective in either of those positions. But being that RH seems to wedded to a run first QB, I probably know the answer.

Believe he has another year of eligibility left.

Recall an interview with Cam last season when he spoke glowingly of Ashten. Said he knew the offense as well, if not better, as anyone in QB room, was a resource others went to, and freely offered helpful suggestions.

Believe he lights it up again tomorrow with fewer bad decisions. Go Spiders.

This was a very conservative offense again today, although Snelsire did not throw INTs. He threw well enough. It looks like he ran the ball too many times, 11 for 20 yards, with his longest being 14 yards. Was he sacked a lot?
