Postmortem Offense

We'll be fine. Just do enough to win.
I definitely appreciate the perspective. Hell, we've started slow the last two seasons and made the playoffs but the Howard game seems like an ominous foreshadowing of what this season could devolve into if the offense doesn't figure some things out quick. Lots of 3 and outs by our offense leading to our defense being on the field for over 40 minutes. I didn't think our defense was particularly good from the start of the game (lots of missed tackles, etc) but they definitely seemed to be pressing as they knew we weren't doing anything on offense. If the QB run game isn't producing yardage it doesn't look like we have any answers on offense. Again, you take any win you can get and it's much better to be correcting your mistakes after a W but if our goal is playoff/conference contenders we've got a long way to go and not sure we have the personnel to get there on offense right now.

I agree and will also bring up our first round loss in the playoffs last year. Even if we win a lot of our remaining games it wont be a good indicator that we’re a good enough team to win in the playoffs.

Given what we lost to graduation and especially the 11 to the portal if we can find a way to make the playoffs it would be one hell of an accomplishment. Anyone thinking we would make a deep run in the playoffs after the exodus is smoking dope.

I don’t think there’s any way to find. Even if the Spiders win out, making the playoffs is going to be dependent on numerous other schools losing against lower rated opponents. If the Spiders win all of their Patriot league games then it will still be a good year one accomplishment and simply unfortunate that they had to play Lehigh to start the season.

I’m all for winning out. Not like last year, I’m not feeling it with what we’ve seen so far this year. There is very little offense to speak of. Defense can win games, but doubtful every game. I don’t keep a data base, but I’d be curious how low our offensive output is relative to previous years.

Guys and gals,

This is no surprise. When Cam hit the road,Huseman should have found an experienced, mobile QB in the portal.#16 and #18 were never gonna be the answer, even with “stepping down to the Patriot league”.We knew that from last year’s debacle of a start.Lets not kid ourselves.
Coleman could see the field.Neither of these QBs see the field nor throw accurately with authority. They are pocket passers without a view.We got what we got. This predicament severely hurts our ability to effectively have a balanced offense. It puts a ton of pressure on our
run offense when you are unable to throw the ball.
We should give the young guys a shot at QB.

Agree. Every team should always have a decent QB with the transfer portal. There are just too many good QBs and so few slots. It’s not a promising sign that Baby Huey was the QB coach for the last two years and didn’t see the need to bring in some competition for the spot. Not having someone with a different skill set in case the game plan doesn’t work as intended is something that Papa Huey shouldn’t have let happen.

It’s damning that 16 was the plan the last couple of seasons. Cam was put in out of necessity but Huesman always evaluated 16 as the best option. We all know that Russ isn’t an offensive guy …he doesn’t have an offensive system…and that’s fine if we would have hired another guy like Cosh as OC and brought in a good transfer QB. This season seemed destined for failure on the offensive side of the ball before it even started.

So Wick was our starting QB last year until Cam took over. Wick is the QB this year. I believe he’s a redshirt junior, and should we assume that Russ will start him again next year?

maybe, but our offense is getting worse not better. We’re not going in the right direction. doing just enough to win isn’t a message that will get kids to stick around.

There's 5 qbs on the roster. At this level you have recruit, develop and retain. Retention is a big issue with what's going on in college sports. We appear to be doing well with recruiting and development. Some way somehow we've got to retain. May be fighting a losing battle versus FBS money.

Cam didn’t leave for FBS money.Ask Russ why Cam left.

I don't care why he left, he left. Cam is not the only one to leave. I'm pulling for the guys that stayed.
I care why Coleman left, because it affects the health of our football program. In another post, someone (I am not certain who) indicated that Russ Huesman had nothing to do with the reason our offense fell apart at the end of last season. Last season our team was stocked with highly talented players at skill positions. We had a highly talented offensive coordinator who went to our #1 rival. We were poised for a title run.

Now our QBs, who have been in the program for 5 years, can't hit the broad side of a barn with a football.

I’d agree that Russ never has anything to do with our offense. Good or bad. We’ve been to the playoffs the last few years and I do think he’s a good defensive mind so he deserves credit but he’s reliant on his OC hires for any offensive scheme or QB development. Every fan base is guilty of a “grass is greener” mindset but it would be nice to enter a game/season with an innovative, cohesive offensive scheme that is fun to watch. You aren’t going to win big in cfb today without a good offense and QB play. The circumstances at this point are irrelevant but Coleman gave us that QB the last two years…the concerning part for me is that Russ did not evaluate Cam as the guy initially before either season, we fell into him out of necessity and this year we clearly did not address the QB issue through development or the portal.
