Postmortem Offense

There has to be another “Billy Cosh” out there somewhere, we can get for an OC.
I’m sure there is, but it would require firing, reassigning, or creating another Co-Coordinators.

I’m not sure Coach Huesman would do it. He worked hard to get Jacob to the OC role, wouldn’t think he’d give up on it easily.

It will be interesting to see where we head with the offense.

Go Spiders!

Or baby Huesman getting hired by someone else because he was successful here. The longest of shots unless things change. One can hope.

Often have thought we have expected too much of this team. Cannot lose 11 starters to FBS plus normal grads an expect to come back whole. Not surprised by season to date. Joked about The Chief predicting a Holy Cross win, but actually agreed with him.

Much earlier 32 predicted a 6-6 finish. Believe we will do better, but not by much.

The offense really is handicapped by the coaching. Its not just play calling. Its the inexplicable love for Wickersham and all that comes with that. Look the guy is tough and committed, but in the games he has played he has either carried the ball or passed it on 2/3 of our offensive snaps. He is simply not dynamic enough in either the run game or the pass game to justify the whole offense centered around him to this level. This is especially true since we design the whole offense to accommodate his limited skill set and then are forced to bad plays calls because the offense simply is designed to be more dynamic than what we see.

I'd rather live with someone's mistakes while they develop than live with the significant limitations of a fully developed mistake free Wickersham. Its really unbelievable to me how we keep turning to this guy even as we see time and again how limited he is and how much he limits us. We have never been a good offensive team with him, but at times during his time here we have been very good with other quarterbacks who we chose Wickersham over!

And at this point this year, there is absolutely no reason to play him any more. Give me one of the youngsters and let him play loose - - - if he turns it over a bunch, at least he is hopefully learning.

Wickersham = 6 years as a Spider (and counting...). Only Huesman would bench a starting qb who was 8-0

Watching other Patriot games today,Georgetown v Bucknell,Lehigh v Fordham, each of those offenses and their QBs were much more dynamic and versatile in comparison to UR’s alternatives. We are so very limited in any form of a dynamic approach in running an offense. We’ve never had an opposing defense on their heels.

Huesman approach is deliberate, not dynamic. His coaching record shows it works more often than not.

Personally like a more wide open O, but not arguing with recent success,

Will add, Coach has said many times over many years, he leaves the O to others. FU he is in your face, but he ain't calling plays.

Coaching record got a big boost thanks to a dynamic QB though, even if not the first choice.

Got it. Sort of. Coach had an enviable record before UR and QB selection here.

Young team. Inexperienced team. 11 FBS transfers plus normal grads. Too many missed assignments. Too many bone head penalties.

Based on what we had coming back, say we are right where a non fan would expect us to be regardless of coach or QB.

I would say Reece Udinski and Jakob Herres, along with Billy Cosh, saved Huesman in 2022. Winston October was his OC in 23 and 24.
Udinski and Coleman are the type of qb we should be trying to be continually recruiting and building an offense around. They had the capability to open the game up much more than the predictable alternative.

Of course we have to have the right skill and vision of coaches directing the recruiting, offense that we run, and play calling.

That's what I keep coming back to...Russ certainly gets credit for the past two Playoff teams but in both seasons his original plan (16 at QB) was bailed out by Coleman having to come in out of injury necessity. After not only one but two of these seasons Russ still doubled down with 16 as his starter. I feel confident in saying we would have seen these offensive struggles much more over the past two seasons if 16 would have remained at QB. We know this because he is a senior now (when he should be at his best) and we are still seeing these limitations/issues. There are plenty of great CEO style coaches out there but Russ continues to rely on a QB run centric playbook without a dynamic QB. Just hire a really good OC (like when we had Cosh) and let him do his thing with a really good, solid QB who fits that OC's style.
