Postmortem Offense

Has there been any Patriot League team that isn’t more dynamic than UR? I can’t think of any. Huesmann is obviously a believer in old time football with the “ground and pound” offense and a solid D. That type of game is always low scoring and thus close. It is also boring and that is the primary issue for the fan base. Add on losses instead of wins and you get this season.

The counter argument is that if you run the same thing and don't change, bad things happen. Howard showed how to stop us. Our response is to run Wickersham up the middle. Granted, the other teams can't stop him, but he gets hurt.

I often hear people on the board say, a win is all that matters and I completely disagree. When the games are boring for the players and the fans then your program is going to have a difficult time progressing. it’s just as much about the journey as it is the destination.

This year is a perfect example. The last three November’s have been football nirvana. Every game with Championship and Playoff implications. Football also has the powerful socialization of the pregame fellowship and camaraderie. Comparing this year’s November to last season’s is depressing and something I don’t want to get used to again!

Go Spiders!

100% agree. Take the Jim Reid era. Not to impugn someone who by all accounts is a great teacher and better person, I completely lost interest in Spider football during his tenure. The whole game seemed to be played between the 30-yard lines. My recollection is the last game I attended we won 3-0 and I was bored to tears. What got me back - Dave Clawson and his style of play.

Personally, I prefer winning teams.

Sounds like soccer. 2-1 , 75% of the time.

RH knows how to win but when Billy Cosh was running OC his offense was not predictable.
But now it is very predictable and not very creative. If the defense is not very dominant, we are
in trouble, especially if defenses force us to just pass.
Isn't Russ's son calling the plays? He was supposedly a QB with a big arm and threw it a lot at Chat. If that's the case, why is our play calling flat, and too many times we let the air out and play not to lose instead of to win?

Jacob Huesman is the OC, but ultimately the head coach directs what he wants to see. Granted our #1 & #2 QBs
are banged up, but when even the announcer (former player) is questioning why the same plays are being called, you know there is something going on with the ability of the offense to run plays correctly. Where were the jet sweeps using Dawson or Fair? Why was bubble screens the only play used during Rams blitzes? My point is there is little to no creativity and opposing teams know what is coming.

Coach Huesman’s son at Chatty may have had a big arm, but he was best known for his hard nosed running. That seems to be what Huesman has been looking for for years out of KW, who’s clearly been unable to create the offense that Jacob generated at Chattanooga. They’re probably calling the same types of plays here without the athleticism and talent to execute them.

Go Spiders!

The Patriot League coaches are not stupid. They have scouted us and they know what we are going to do. The Spiders tried Jet sweeps several times, the plays resulted in lost yardage. We shut down the offense with about 10 minutes left in the game. After that, we kept going 3 and out on short run plays. It was a mistake.

Maybe the caliber of coaches is better in the Patriot League.

For a second game with enough time left on the clock to run a play or two before half, we opted to wind it down for a FG attempt. Baffling. Sends a bad message to the team too.

Been a long time since have watched a game as ugly as today's. All hail the defense though!

Jacob's senior year at QB for Chatty (2015):

278 passing attempts (163 yards/game)
220 rushing attempts (96 yards/game)

That's a lot of QB runs...

With respect, NO. Hard to enjoy a game where we self destructed on special teams and on O at critical times. Yeah, we won against a team with a single victory, hurrah, but this performance, if continued, is not going to promise many more, if any, victories. D holds them to 161 yds I believe and forces 3 TOs and we win by 3? Sloppy, sloppy performance, particularly in 10th week of season and after a bye week.

Always a Go Spiders fan, but we need to get our stuff together PDQ.

The criticism of the play calling is appropriate. I watched the game and Jasmon Coleman was constantly pointing out the errors in the play calling. He noted that the offense essentially shut down with about 10 minutes to go in the game. We kept running the ball up the middle into a pack of defenders and Mr. Coleman kept saying that it was too soon to try to run out the clock. My dog Winston, who is a football fan, couldn't bear to watch it.

Huesman is going to have to change the approach to football.

I enjoyed this game more, because I have a better understanding of the game, given the elevated analysis that we are getting here.

Oh and we won.
