Perspective from a Student

That's irrelevant...there was plenty of passion for spiders athletics when I was in school and very few of the people I knew were from VA..the school can help generate passion..they just choose not to....
My friend group had 2 guys who were local. We all still hit almost every Spider home game (I only missed one while on campus in my 4 years). None of us were Richmond fans until our first day on campus but we were always there. 3rd row of the student section on those bleachers, the side closest to the enemies bench so we could let them hear it.

If the team had been this hopeless then, we would not have attended.

CM could be Abe Lincoln and still not be able to pitch this program. People want to watch winners, it’s really not that complicated.

I’ve long said that you can’t solve what ails us through fan engagement, game experience, or $5 cheap seats.

Fix the product, specifically, the teams gotta win more and play meaningful games.
Tbone this is absolutely true. Rosa Parks could be our coach and I’d still want her fired for the betterment of the school and program.

Josh Schertz. A coach, who would’ve definitely come to UR too had we offered. These coaches exist.
Yes, these type of coaches are out there and we could easily hire one, but instead we are so lucky to have the dean of A10 coaches, and he's going nowhere. Why would he? He's got it made even though we don't.

Student body geographic composition had definitely already changed by the time he arrived, which was while I was there. But going from Morrill to Cooper certainly changed the overall vibe of the administration. And the 30% tuition increase in 2005 before he got the boot was another big shift in perception and atmosphere to further align with elite liberal arts colleges.
For some reason, I always think of the second big geographic shift as 1998.

Although I suppose 8 years before me had a much large Richmond area attendance.
When I was there seemed to be nearly 20% VA, PA, NY, NJ, and other.

For your 80th birthdays you will be gifted Head Coach Peter Thomas, with assistants Will Gipe, Kirby Mooney, Son1 and Son2. Son1 will be coach in waiting to assume HC after 10 years.

It’s not that fun to support a team that loses. Fans will do it, but at some point they opt to spend their time and energy elsewhere.

As a student, it’s easy to arrive at that juncture, it’s a little slower for alumni. I think we’re at that tipping point, you can already see a drop in attendance and enthusiasm. That won’t get fixed without a major program change or Starting to win a lot.

I was not a basketball fan when I went to UR, never played it, never watched it. But UR was really good when I was there and it was really fun to be in an arena with on average 7300 people a game.

I totally get why students wouldn’t go today, especially if they aren’t basketball people.

Gotta fix the product.
