OOC scheduling for mid-majors

I know this has been covered in various threads, but I think it needs a thread of its own as it is obviously a very important factor for at-large bids and a sore spot for Spider fans.

Interesting article on the topic from the JMU coach.

Explains the Men’s vs Women’s scheduling that was discussed in the recent Spider Sound Off (Ep 11) and also talks about the upcoming exhibition between UR and JMU. Unsurprisingly, JMU has been asking for an in-season game and UR has declined.

Also shows that the Sun Belt is doing everything it can for its schools; whereas, the A10 seems to be living in the past. The more I read the more I see how the A10 is the perfect match for UR and UR must have some significant influence.

Sorry about the link issue. I keep getting the same result when pasting from my browser. Google “JMU's' Spradlin explains challenges of scheduling” by Shane Mettlen of Daily News Record.

Article is from Sept 10th and have been a number of sports articles since that time so probably have to scroll to find once you get to the Daily News Record site.

Since I can’t share the article itself here is the first part that cites UR:

“….no longer conference mates, the Dukes and Spiders haven’t played since 2018.

That’s not for lack of trying on JMU’s part.

The past three Dukes coaching staffs have all tried to resume the regular-season series, and each has heard the same answer.

Richmond would love to scrimmage but wasn’t interested in a real game.“

link not open for me

right, Sman. This is all more and more evidence every day that this is more of a choice schedule, than the excuses thrown out.

Really pitifull that Mooney won't play JMU. I know they lost their stud coach after they had that really good team. Just pure fear. And Hardt doing nothing.

Agree, Sman, would love to have them on the schedule. Still scarred by going to the midnight massacre game at JMU :). Actually it wasn't that bad being such a blowout, but still not great.

Wait, I didn't listen to the podcast, is Mooney afraid to play JMU basketball?

unconfirmed. can't open the link.
Updated post with source, but can’t get link to work. Will try again tonight.

The podcast didn’t mention JMU at all. The podcast talked about Men’s vs Women’s schedules and this article has some insight into that from the JMU perspective (which I am sure is the same for UR).

Thanks SF that works,

Here is the passage:

But no longer conference mates, the Dukes and Spiders haven’t played since 2018.

That’s not for lack of trying on JMU’s part.

The past three Dukes coaching staffs have all tried to resume the regular-season series, and each has heard the same answer.

And with our OOC schedule the last 2 years, avoiding JMU is pathetic and unacceptable.

Someone should ask Mooney this directly at his weekly get together. Would like to hear an answer. Is it still at World Of Beers on Broad St?

JMU had a net of 158 last year and 52 the year before. They would’ve been an excellent team to play in OOC. Plus we would maintain the in-state rivalry. Instead, we’ll play VMI for the 50th time in a row. Reinforces that this was 100% intentional to have such a bad schedule. Just sad.
