Mooney's Plan?

Here's an accompanying video from the press conference today. Again, good on JOC for actually asking Mooney some direct questions. Still, Mooney can just dance around them as he's so adept at doing.

I am so tired of this concept of "doing everything we can to represent the University the right way" that he keeps bringing up. How about doing everything we can to recruit/build the best roster and win games every year?? How about doing everything we can to analyze our current offensive/defensive systems to determine if they're still effective in this era of basketball?

MDSpider8 probably gave you want you needed as the article is another press conference summary special.

The newest thing was Mooney indicating that he is on board with remaining the coach. What a surprise.

JOC pointed out CM under contract until 2029 it is believed and UR has never terminated a coach in any sport before contract ends. But UR had never given up a 30 point lead before either, so maybe anything can eventually happen…

the plan is:
1) increase NIL. won't help us catch SLU, VCU or Dayton but we can target Duquesne and LUC.
2) extend Mooney. need to show stability for the high school recruits. two additional years sounds right.
3) lose early. a win and we get a late start on the portal. that's tough to recover from.

There is no world in which Mooney should be extended

When I saw the title of this thread, 2 things come to mind as Moon Plan - 1) weave, weave, weave and 2) put Tyne on opposing team 6’8” players under the basket.

What else is needed to be successful? Those 2 things have worked all season. Why change now.

Summary of Mooney’s interview in video:
- Talks about tough loss to Duquesne and needing to have quick turnaround to start A10 tournament Wednesday
- Strategies of going into Loyola game with general game plan.
- Lots of variability in basketball performance. Had competed with A10 teams except SLU. Block the noise and focus for Wednesday.
- Mooney confirms he intends to return next year. Talks about the sports landscape and the sports talk surrounding a coach
- States goal of how impactful having good basketball is in visibility for school. Working on positioning Richmond in best way possible
- States the administrative leadership, front office donors have been involved to positioning Richmond to do the best it can moving forward
- Confident that UR will invest well next year to be aligned with the top of the A10 with payroll. Talked about how UR has invested with other things in the past to well. Talked about how things change quickly. Stated “Committed and recognizes how impactful our basketball can be in a positive way”
- intention “most competitive we can possibly be in regard to facilities, investment, and player salaries” says every other A10 team is trying to do the same thing. Excited about discussions he’s had. “We’re invested and think we’re an attractive place”

I didn’t get much out of this other than it seems like administration and donors have been more involved in trying to get our program back to the top. Didn’t explicitly say the number but was heavily suggested that we will be operating with a higher payroll next year. My guess will be around $4-5 million similar to what VCU and Dayton has done.

The thing he has beat our reputation down so much, that NIL being equal we are no longer much of a destination and he is not that enticing of a coach. Unless you like comfort and lack of physicality, which im sure some players do.

I will say that if there is one potential positive, if you want to view it this way, with this new NIL world is that for most players money talks and everything else walks. Before, someone like Mooney may have had to try and convince a kid to come here over a school like Virginia Tech or Clemson. For many 17 year old kids, it might be harder to convince them to come to a smaller school where you actually have to go to class, doesn’t have as much national exposure, compared to a Virginia Tech or Clemson. Despite that I still think Richmond could’ve done better in recruiting and better coaching and results certainly would help that case. I don’t know if Mooney has the energy to connect with kids these days who use social media, as a way of recruiting.

Regardless, all of what I said though could change and I’m sure many kids will overlook a lot of those things that may have made Richmond “less attractive” than other P5 schools if we’re offering them more money. So hearing that we’re going to have more money next year is at least somewhat encouraging. Now, of course we need a staff who can identify the right talent and spend our money effectively but if done correctly, NIL can be advantageous for us.
