Can someone paraphrase, or is this the same crap we already talked about....generalities around improvement?
the plan is:
1) increase NIL. won't help us catch SLU, VCU or Dayton but we can target Duquesne and LUC.
2) extend Mooney. need to show stability for the high school recruits. two additional years sounds right.
3) lose early. a win and we get a late start on the portal. that's tough to recover from.
Summary of Mooney’s interview in video:Here's an accompanying video from the press conference today. Again, good on JOC for actually asking Mooney some direct questions. Still, Mooney can just dance around them as he's so adept at doing.
I am so tired of this concept of "doing everything we can to represent the University the right way" that he keeps bringing up. How about doing everything we can to recruit/build the best roster and win games every year?? How about doing everything we can to analyze our current offensive/defensive systems to determine if they're still effective in this era of basketball?
I will say that if there is one potential positive, if you want to view it this way, with this new NIL world is that for most players money talks and everything else walks. Before, someone like Mooney may have had to try and convince a kid to come here over a school like Virginia Tech or Clemson. For many 17 year old kids, it might be harder to convince them to come to a smaller school where you actually have to go to class, doesn’t have as much national exposure, compared to a Virginia Tech or Clemson. Despite that I still think Richmond could’ve done better in recruiting and better coaching and results certainly would help that case. I don’t know if Mooney has the energy to connect with kids these days who use social media, as a way of recruiting. The thing he has beat our reputation down so much, that NIL being equal we are no longer much of a destination and he is not that enticing of a coach. Unless you like comfort and lack of physicality, which im sure some players do.
You didn’t realize our record in 2017-2018 & 2018-2019 was because of how low our NIL was?So this year's excuse is NIL even though Mooney couldn't win before NIL. What will next year's excuse be?
Perhaps, the type of players he draws, like himself, just like easy money. The thing he has beat our reputation down so much, that NIL being equal we are no longer much of a destination and he is not that enticing of a coach. Unless you like comfort and lack of physicality, which im sure some players do.
