Mooney’s Coaching Tree (including former players)

You make some good points, but I dunno. Emotional element of being at your Alma mater vs millions $ more and being at a P5. If you are indeed referring to UR, I’m thinking most potential coaches would be bound for the P5 and millions more.
You make some good points as well and I think you’re right that maybe 7 or 8 out of 10 coaches will try to shoot for P5 for money or prestige if they have the chance but I do think that there is an appeal for a coach to want to come to Richmond, where we know all know job security is fantastic, it’s a very nice city, we play high level basketball in A10 with great resources, and the coach can make millions of dollars over their careers with relatively lower pressure and scrutiny compared to being at a P5. Factor in that it is your alma mater as well, and there are definitely some strong selling points there for Hovde.

every coach worth his salt would "choose" coaching in the SEC or ACC over coaching at Richmond.
it's just not usually a choice.

I doubt Ivy coaches get paid anywhere near what we pay here. Hovde would jump at our offer. but Mooney is no where near retiring.

as for Hovde going to a higher level ... I don't think a Columbia coach would be on any HM radar.

Agree with 1st two parts but think Hovde is in a special situation given he was one of Golden's main guys .. we'll see.

Agree, if he continues on this path and were to end up battling and beating Yale, I think he is well thought of and - to your point known from Florida. And, I know Sman already told us Columbia has been an absolute bottom feeder, with last coach logging 9 consecutive losing season - to turn it around this quickly (if maintains) would be a very good look. Already getting some decent production out of Soulis is an example of getting players and developing. I have a feeling Hovde will be moving up in a couple years. What level, who knows. But likely we will miss him unless he goes high mid major level and we could be a lateral move.

Can see Hovde taking a similar trajectory out of Columbia as Kyle Smith did. A direct jump to P4 is unlikely, but several quick stops moving up the ladder is definitely possible if he keeps winning.
