Mooney’s Coaching Tree (including former players)

Geriot
If he does really well at Iona, he could leap frog Richmond. Iona is actually a pretty strong hoops school, big expectations for winning. The move to Richmond, while we all think would be a big step up - is probably closer to lateral. Before Tobin Anderson, they had Willard, Cluess, (one year with Tra Arnold?) and Pitino. Look how quick they kicked Tobin Anderson to the curb. Geriot better be winning in year two. If he does do well, and like likes the big city, he may want to stay at Iona as well for awhile.
I think you need to factor in the emotional ties due to playing at Richmond and the salary to pedigree to expectations ratio. The thought of getting paid $1 million+ salary at their alma mater with a chance to bring it to greater national prominence, while also having one of the best job security in college basketball has to be an enticing option.

Yep, i get that, the ties to Richmond would seemingly be very strong for all three. I did also think that about Geriot - if he has a couple good years at Iona, and Mooney does step down (very small chance) - he may see the reality that Richmond seems to provide the best job security in all of D1.

Will be interesting to watch all three. All I know for certain is that these three are much more interesting options than anyone on the current staff.

Agree completely. I don't know who Mooney has pictures of, but could see him using those to get Peter hired.

Chu seems most likely to be different from Mooney despite having played for him, so I would vote for him if he shows something at Radford.
And being different is a good thing and can’t be overstated. As I’ve said before, when we finally do get a new coach I hope it’s a new basketball philosophy and mindset. Haven’t we seen enough of what we have and practically little change and flexibility?

Iona doesn't f*ck around with coaches. Despite being in a very mid major conference, they clearly want to make an impact that hits above their weight class.

If we hire Peter Thomas whenever we are finally done with Mooney, I will never step foot in the Robins Center again. The only hope I cling to is Mooney getting close to generational wealth in the next few years, retiring, and then we do a full legit national search for a coach and hire someone who has the potential to completely breathe new fresh air in our program. Peter Thomas is a damn Mooney clone, talks like Mooney, coaches like Mooney, is completely "mid" like Mooney in every conceivable way.

Agreed, and for the record i hope we hire someone with no ties at all to CM whenever that day comes.

Right but Cluess mad a million. And Pitino was likely getting that number supplemented , just like all the big time coaches.

My point is that Iona admin has a very shorter leash and much greater appetite to win now.
you said the move from Iona to Richmond is close to lateral. I don't think anyone sees it that way. it's a big step up in conference and reputation ... and pay. Pitino was at $600k and had a large buyout ... that Iona let slide.

if Geriot does well at Iona, I don't think he gets to skip the A10 level to go straight to the P5s. Richmond would be a fit ... unless we reward Mooney with another extension after a big win over Elon this winter.

scratch that. Willard had two 12 win seasons at Iona before he parlayed one good year into a Seton Hall contract. so it doesn't take much apparently.

Right, we do see guys at midmajor level jump to power conference. But there are a lot of factors of course. One guy we were tracking on here was Wes Miller, jumped from UNCG to cincy, but could get fired after this season.

if MAAC guys don't see us as a big enough jump, how far down do we have to go?!
hopefully not Patriot League.
