I truly believe you could give Mooney a 10 mil Nil budget and the results

I shared on another thread but will say it on this thread too.

I honestly think the strategy our admin has is to give Mooney a ton of NIL next year. Wouldn’t be surprised if we’re top 2 or 3. It’ll still be cheaper than buying out his contract. The idea is to have one year where he does really well. Not necessarily making the NCAA tournament but trying to replicate the 2023-2024 season. Their hope is this can cool off the pressure they’ve gotten that’ll last for the last 2 years of his contract in which they’ll go back to paying him the middle of the A10. They won’t care about the results because at the end of those 2 years Mooney retires.
I still don't see us doing well next year, even with a lot of NIL. When has Mooney ever done well with a bunch of guys 1st year in the system? We need 4 new starters with AA. Anyone else who returns is not going to be a good enough starter to put us at or near the top of the A-10, but of course, it is always possible Mooney starts Tyne and Tanner next year as well, ignoring the fact that we just went 5-14 A-10 with them starting this year.

Quinn and Bigs both took a big jump in year 2 with us. We also had a senior in Dji who made a big jump that year. So, while King and Hunt were new in 2024, they came in with some talent around them. Nearly all the guys this year will be new, making it that much harder for us to be good in Mooney's outdated system. Unfortunately, I don't see us getting close to the 15-3 A-10 we saw that year, even with a lot of NIL. With a new coach, new players, and a new system, absolutely 15-3 would be possible next year.

The only season I can think where he did well with multiple new guys was the Jordan King/DeLo year, and that year we had sufficiently crapped the bed in OOC that it made the A10 regular season crown irrelevant for post-season purposes.

So I'm in agreement, I don't think we stand a chance to be much better next year even with some dramatically better players. Right now, we need a center (probably two tbh), at least one really strong wing player, and another guy who can be a 3/4 type with some length. PG is about the only position that I have any confidence in, and that's presuming we get our rookie star back and he's backed up by a couple of sub-5'9" guys.

Perhaps more importantly, if we keep trotting out the same defensive strategy, rebounding approach, and offensive system, the results don't seem likely to improve much.

We basically need an entire new roster, unless you are expecting something from Tyne, Tanner and Robinson next year (I'm not). I expect AA will leave if he has any sense about him. Does anyone trust Mooney to build anything from scratch that can be successful in one year??

Our roster outside of AA is an absolute wasteland. Mooney would have to hit on 4 A-10 level starters and 2 of them will have be all A-10 guys for us to be good next year. Does anyone really see that happening?

We are going to be at best mediocre mid of the pack team next year and at worst, we have another year like the past 2. I'm honestly going to relish Hardt and PQ having to sit through it and see what they have wrought.

I really don’t think Q and H care. You have to wonder what makes those guys tick. It certainly isn’t winning. I’ve said before that I think these guys look at our failing program as a hobby. Those guys own the failures and perpetuate it. We need a complete reboot with Q, H, and M not involved in the program.

It's impossible to think they care. 300+ coaches would have been fired after these last 2 seasons. We don't even hear the word unacceptable. All we heard was "Mooney will return'".

Even if we landed all those guys, I have lost all confidence Mooney could win enough with them. Of course, we would be better, but we would still have the same offense, the same defense, and the same in game coaching.

No chance. This would be a great time to bring a new coach in, letting him get his players to fit his style of play.

Completely agree. We have no one on our roster outside of Aiden that is of any consequence. This is the perfect time to make a coaching change. Literally, if the entire roster went into the portal because we have a new coach, I wouldn't miss any of them (outside of Aiden).

It is impossible to believe they don't understand all of Mooney's many faults, because they would have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to not know. Hardt goes to most games, he has to see our outdated easily exploitable offense and defensive philosophies, our lack of in game adjustments, our failings at the worst possible times.

The only thing I can come to is this is an ole boys Club mentality. They are bros with Mooney and they are protecting him because of this relationship. It is a really sad abdication of their professional responsibilities. We have a leadership school for god sake, can someone at the University not stand up and say our most high profile public employee is substandard at his job and yet we keep him here. What does that say about the rest of the University?

This is exactly it right here. They are buddies and will just ignore the outside noise, because we have barely any media, and the media we have makes excuses and doesn't put any pressure to perform on moon.

I will say the morning show on our Flagship station in Richmond said they didn't understand the logic for retaining Mooney and said they would have moved on. It sucks that they are just now realizing it after the decision has been made. I do feel like next year he will be on the hot seat but unfortunately for us it means another year of purgatory for the fans and the program.

Load up the OOC with cupcakes, win 2 more games in conference..............extension.

I still like Harper and JRob. Willing to see what Richardson brings next year. Maybe Thomas.

Why even bring Thomas back? No offense, but I forgot he was even on the team sometimes. Plenty of guys can score 4 ppg. Find the cheapest ones you can.
I actually liked his game better than Johnston. I’m not saying he’s some kind of difference maker, but he’d be a fine bench guy and we don’t need to replace the entire roster.

More than anything else the team needs two big men. The problem, of course, is that Moon man won't play them together and whoever plays will be marooned above the foul line 80 percent of the time. It isn't the players, it's the coach and his system.
