Posted this a while ago. Really need to separate the Power Conferences from the rest of the conferences. The Power Conferences could have their championship (maybe use the current NCAA tournament) and the rest of the conferences could just rename the NIT as the Group of 26 Championship. Clearly no mid major is truly “good enough” to compete with the major conferences on a consistent basis. Sure win a game every now and then against the bottom feeders, or beat a legitimate team when their best player is injured, but in my humble opinion there needs to be a separation as in football. Just my humble opinion.

“ Was wondering last night about the record for the 26 non-Power Conferences vs teams currently ranked in the AP Top 25. The overall record is 6-189. Twenty four of the conferences, including our mighty A10, have zero wins against ranked teams. To further clarify, Grand Canyon of the Mountain West has one win against ranked teams, while the West Coast Conference includes Portland with a single win and Gonzaga (moving soon to Pac 12) with 4 wins to make up the rest. To me, it is pure folly to think that our Spiders, fellow members of the A10 and other non-Power Conferences really matter in the overall scheme of things in D1 college basketball. Truth is, there are now the Power Conferences (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Big East, SEC, Pac 12) and the Group of 26, much like in football with the Group of 5. As in football and now in basketball, the non Power Conferences should have their own schedules and championships, thus allowing for greater gratification among their members.”
“17”, my comment was not aimed specifically at my undergraduate alma mater, rather the comments were directed at all non P4 programs. The differences between the two levels have changed over the last few years with the new rules on paying players. Here again, I don’t like it; it is just reality. Wouldn’t it be nice for all schools to have a realistic shot at winning a trophy? Under the current rules (I guess they could change), a mid major wins a game, then goes home likely having been blown out in the next game. So again, please don’t read into my comments that they were aimed specifically at our program. Thank you.I don’t mean this in any disrespectful way, but it is concerning that we have donors/insiders in the program that are okay having the mentality that there should be a separation between P4 schools and non-P4 schools in basketball or think that our coaching staff should have multiple years with a competitive budget to see how he does, irrespective of results. No one that can talk to leadership and advocate that Richmond should aspire to be among the best. This probably permeates to or from our leadership, which is why we are where we are.
Long gone are the days of Richmond being the giant killers, wanting to play in the best competition (moving from CAA to A10), being in talks even to join the big east around 2013. Now instead of trying to aspire to play among the best teams, we are okay with allowing a coach to have multiple years to produce bad results while being given a competitive budget and being okay playing in Division 1-AA for basketball.
Oh well.
The "ins" only work for other programs. Not us, the "ins" like Bryce Golden actually work against our program. As you said, same with scheduling. We are either too good that big programs don't want to schedule us for fear of a loss or too bad that we are a NET anchor for them.A problem with Mooney is that he always has an out too, and that usually outweighs the in. Kind of like scheduling. Is the dean of A10 coaches, and built all these relationships for a million years in the coaching fraternity, but can't get games??
The NIT only has 4 majors in it. Next year, I doubt it will have any. So, mid majors already have a chance to "win a trophy" there. I would rather have a goal of being SLU or VCU ths year and getting to the dance than separating from the power conferences. I am sure I am not alone in saying my interest level would drop to almost zero if we ever did that.“17”, my comment was not aimed specifically at my undergraduate alma mater, rather the comments were directed at all non P4 programs. I appreciate the thoughtful response Spide and your contributions as well on the board. Again, I truly hope it didn’t come across the wrong way, just expressing my concern. You certainly bring up validate questions about the current state of college basketball. There are a lot of things outside our university cannot control.“17”, my comment was not aimed specifically at my undergraduate alma mater, rather the comments were directed at all non P4 programs. I’d rather lose in the first four of the NCAA tournament than win the NIT championship and it’s not even close. The NIT only has 4 majors in it. Next year, I doubt it will have any. God?What was the in Liberty had with their top 150 recruit?
100%. The NIT is a joke at this point. No one really wants to play in it. Games are poorly attended (although I think New Mexico is knocking it out of the park) but largely no cares about the NIT. It is irrelevant.I’d rather lose in the first four of the NCAA tournament than win the NIT championship and it’s not even close.
Irrelevant to powers schools and to mid majors who have had some recent NCAA dance success, but I think it is still relevant to plenty of mid majors.100%. The NIT is a joke at this point.
