Game thread - @ VCU Tuesday 1/27 7pm CBS Sports Network

Disagree, it was embarrassing.

VCU had multiple times where they missed 10 or more FGs in a row. Had a stretch where they didn't make a FG for like 9 minutes.

Yet, we were never a threat to win, even against that type of opponent performance.

That's embarrassing. Don't lower the bar. Offense was crap except for Walz and Lopez shot making. Defense was horrible, blow bys, easy hoops starting with the first two baskets of the game. "That's too easy" should be written on every announcer's scorecard, to be used multiple times per game.

Bonus embarrassment: Down 6, under 30 seconds and there is no coaching instruction to take a 3? Does anyone on the staff have any clue of situational awareness?

Double Bonus embarrassment: the game was tied the first 25 seconds until VCU scored and then VCU led the next 39:35, despite playing a thoroughly uninspired game.
Agree, we were terrible. Offense and defense sucked. VCU on cruise control and we had zero organization or purpose on offense. This game planning looks good vs Citadel and D3, but not A10.

Walz first three buckets were turnaround midrange jumpers. Literally the worst shot you can take. He loves those.

To his credit, he made them, but I’d hope someone would have coached that out of him by now.
Waltz did make some, but we took and missed several others. We only shot 15 3s. We needed to take more 3s and less mid range 2s.

The scoreboard wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be before the game started. But somehow, that makes it worse than if we had lost by 30. Because most of the game it felt like that's what was going on.

Mooney made it sound like we are a 300+ NET team who was a 30 point underdog with how great everything was after an 8 point loss. I have said before I like that he is a player's coach, but my goodness, it is not a good look to be crowning our guys like that after a conference loss.

Yep. Little ol’ Richmond. Facing big bad bully vcu. They punched us in the face & took our lunch money - again - but we got a girly kick to the shins in. But tbh that interview is all about Moon. He’s gotta know he’s 9-28. So u spin a loss as a “win” & talk about being gutsy & hanging in. The last thing u ever ever do is take personal ownership.

This all goes back to the lowering of standards with U of R men’s hoops. Without dispute it’s occurred under Mooney regime. With help from friends like PQ, Big Hat No Cattle Hardt, and yes even MrTbone’s boy Hallock.

Think about Philly Bob’s old 1 in 4 ncaa MINIMUM. Marginal standard anyway & just Philly Bob’s but Mortal Lock guarantee with all of Ulla’s ranches that Philly Bob would walk that back today. Yet I bet he has Sirianni on the hot seat.

It is disgusting. And obviously from Walz interview the players have bought right in. Can u imagine Smitty or KA or Ryan Butler being proud of that performance???? Crazy.

Standards are so low now. Best job in all of college hoops according to Steve Seymour.

Saw Butler in the crowd at last night’s game. Spiders Sound Off should interview him. Bet that would be an entertaining episode.

Again I know for a fact the administration had told him to tone down his temper. As a younger coach he got lots of Tech's and of course Charlotte incident. Now he's mellowed out a bit, and he's criticized when he acts classy. tough crowd.

Not saying losing or the record vs VCU is acceptable but what do you want him to do--come out and say we sucked tonight, we were unprepared, etc? The interview was fine.

It was not fine. When you get punked by your alleged rival every time you play them, your fanbase needs to knows that it eats at you, that you hate it more than they do and that it will not continue. Especially when it's been going on for 21 damn years.

But Mooney simply does not care. It's obvious. Playing vcu is just another game to him, or even worse, one that he's afraid of. His teams exude the same attitudes on the court.

I’ve also shared the perspectives that a coach shouldn’t be using the media as an opportunity to criticize players or performance too much. Keep those things in the locker room. So it’s not what is said as much as the attitude in which it’s said. Like come on, this isn’t just another game, it’s our biggest rival. Also, maybe it’s just his personality or way he speaks to media but the way I see it is you can’t have both a lousy record and also (what comes cross as) a complacent attitude about this. We’ve lost the last 4 games in a row. If we were winning more than the results speak for themselves. Now, neither the on court results nor the off court press conferences are speaking for themselves.

I’ve shared many sentiments that you’ve had SpiderWill and still agree or at least completely understand where a lot of your points are coming from, but my perspective changed more just seeing how our women’s coach operates. Look at this tweet below. Roussell is out here promoting his team, who is 16-4 and shouldn’t need promoting, because he wants to continue energizing a fan base. Fans can feel it, the players can feel it. It’s palpable. Josh Schertz in year 2 is promoting his Saint Louis team who had a full crowd on a Tuesday night game. Even McKillop at Davidson said he would buy all 21+ students at Davidson’s last game a beer for going. When do we see this kind of energy from Mooney? Again, I don’t think it’s that important if we are winning but when you’re losing AND lacking energy then it just comes across as complacency.

NOOOOOOO, he is not criticized for toning it down. Look at Brian Dutcher, he doesn't say crazy stuff or classless stuff. But he would never be such a b*%^tch. Mooney is criticized for being a b^*tch.

You don't have to criticize specific players. You can criticize the actions of the team and state that is not the standard we have established in practice. Obviously the standard is low.
